Hi,

What is the easiest way to go when removing the engine from my89, auto, t/t.

Engine and box out together, or leave the box in ??

Is the bolts around the bell housing even kinda accesible ?

Can you unbolt the torque convertor from the flywheel, leaving it in place so the engine will come forward enough to lift out ?

Cheers in anticipation,

Alan.......

The bolts are accessible, you can unbolt the torque converter and yes, leave the gearbox in :)

Mr Mincey,

Assuming your 89 model is a Z32 then the bolts can be reached, but there is a bit of an art to it:

(This is my procedure for my UK manual):

1. Loosen the four rubber boost pipes at the front top of the engine

2. Unbolt shifter from underneath (just the one long bolt)

3. Use a jack to support the gearbox

3. Unbolt rear mount from gearbox

4. Lower the jack until the gearbox is several inches lower than it was (I'm able to remove the jack all together without squashing anything at the rear of the engine)

5. Using 2 long extension bars (each one of mine is about over 18" long) and a universal joint you'll now be able to reach both of the two top bolts

6. now get your jack back underneath (preferably a scissor tranny jack), and support the weight of the box while you unbolt the rest.

Hope this helps m8

Simon.

In the Nissan service manual they say to remove the engine and box together on a manual but to remove the box first on an auto.

I'd always remove the box anyway, you would need a lot of height on your hoist to get it out in one lump.

having removed a few Auto tt engines I find it easier drop the engine on the subframe as the engine automatically moves forward giving you access to the 4 top auto box bolts , you can also leave the torque converter in place by removing the starter motor and remove the 4 bolts that hold it in place , the engine will just lift straight out then

Anyway, you won't get the engine out with the gearbox if its auto, it won't fit through the hole LOL No brainer question ;)

It's a lot of work to find out that it won't fit if you didn't know!

Cheers guys,

Had the engine and auto box out together last time when I did the turbos.

Was just wondering if it would be easier to leave the box in this time, saves a bit of time and hassle.

Engine and box came out together and went back in together last time ok !

Well when I say ok, I mean a wee bit of sweat and a high lift jack, but it went with no damage !!!!

Alan.....
