Devices which detect speed cameras are to be banned, the Government has revealed.

The Department for Transport said it would seek to ban the dashboard devices as soon as possible because of fears motorists were using them to break speed limits without being caught.

Thousands of drivers have installed the detectors after a huge rise in the number of speed camera penalties.

They have already been banned in many European countries including France and Ireland.

A Department for Transport spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the problem and as soon as a legislative opportunity becomes available we will seek to make these devices illegal."

Road safety groups welcomed the announcement. Rob Gifford of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety told The Times: "This is a long overdue closing of a legal loophole.

"Speed camera detectors should not be needed by law-abiding drivers."

Transport minister David Jamieson yesterday said he was happy for people to know where the cameras were. But he did not want information to be passed on revealing whether or not they were switched on.

From the sound of that quote he is advocating the use of a GPS "informer" like the Origin Blue i, he is "Happy" for people to know where they are!! So I should get browny points for using one!!!

still no firm decision on laser blinders which is good, they are a god-send!!!

I've heard about these laser blinders, but want to know more...........?

laser jammers ARE illegal, as they interfere with a police signal

ie they fire the laser at you, the jammer stops their signal, gives you time to slow down with a warning message/tone, turns itself off (the new one does)

so when they then retry to get a reading your within the speed limit

if you have automatic garage doors/gates the jammer operates on the same system;)

can't see how they will make any gps device illegal, as all you are doing is

using information publicly known, a lot of sat navs now have a camera base in them, are they going to make them illegal??

the high court decided

that the radar transmission was not communicating a 'message' and therefore equipment designed to detect the presence of the transmission could not decode any such message.

It was further stated that section 1(1) of the Act, which requires a licence for the reception of radio signals, has been superseded by the Wireless Telegraphy Apparatus (Receivers)(Exemption) Regulations (SI 1989 No123) which exempts radar detectors and similar equipment from the need for such licences

not sure how any goverment is going to overturn that

The original law they used for radar detectors was a radio act of 1949 or something, which was created to stop people listening in to private radio conversations.

Many people where prosicuted but when one did challenge it they police lost because

Radar detectors do no listen in to the conversation, mearly detect that there are radio waves in the air.

Radar guns/ Speed cameras do not have conversations, there is no communication information inside the radio wave.

So the radio act of 1949 could not be used to prosicute people with radar detectors and infact many police forces say they are good, giving an audioable warning to people about blackspots which they dont know about.

It's even more proof that this government is not concerned with road safety but clearly is interested in raising revenue.
