Guys,

Yesterday driving home I had a blow out, not a slow puncture, just "buff" and then a "rumble rumble"............going through Market Harborough...

Anyway, I pull into a side thinking "f*ck!" and get otu to have a look!

My passenger tyre blew out but this is what happend (see image)...

Now, the rest of the tyre is good but it looks like its been rubbing for some time but I never noticed it before? Does this happen on anyone else's? My tyres are 225/40/18 on the front.....

So, I call the AA as I dont have a jack in the car (soon to be addressed) and he comes along and proceeds to jack the car up, after wedging a cheese?!? under the front wheel to raise the car. He then puts the trolley jack under the door pillar and starts to jack, then, theres a sound and my wing pops out!!

I told himt o slow downa nd he was really apologetic but he says the lip underneath has crumbled and this is whats happened. I, shocked, checked the other side and it looks like this side is doing it too!! WTF????

I take it this is a common Zed problem, well for UK cars anyway!!

Any ideas how to get around this? How to jack my car up without destroying it?? And how to sort me wing???

didnt you hear any rubbing noise?

They've jacked your car up incorrectly, contact a body shop, get a quote to fix and get ahold of AA claims.

Yup, the RAC screwed my one up when I had a wheel come off, just settled the claim 6 months later. It really is worth complaining!

Sorry, can't help on the technical front....

I use the "lump of cheese" available form harrys for about 15 quid. Use them to get the car far enough off the floor to get a trolley underneath, the use the proper jacking points to lift the car. Wouldnt ever put a trolley jack on the sill

Assuming that he was using a trolley jack, then I agree that he was wrong in jacking it by the use of the sill position, this is only for the car supplied jack.

No there was no rubbing noises at all, and there never has been.

I guess then I need to claim the repair bill from AA claims......I did sign the form though to say he had done his bit......is this a disclaimer?

Well fooked off, car looks like its growing wings, literally!!!

Firstly, UK cars aren't in the best condition these days. Get it sorted NOW though before it spreads - once the brown demon gets hold of your car it spready VERY quickly!!!

Secondly, your tracking is MILES out! The set of tyres I just took off mine were amazingly close to the state of yours, so I bought a set of adjustable upper links. The problem is caused by either the standard springs sagging or by fitting aftermarket lowering springs. This makes the car sit lower and you get too much negative camber (top of the wheel leans inwards). This problem can also be caused by worn upper links too....

Finally, never ever let anybody else jack your car up for you ;) If you look under the car you'll see a rail either side of the transmission tunnel. As it gets towards the engine bay it tapers off - put the trolley jack as far forwards as you can on the flat part :) Better to use the front cross-member though, the one under the engine (if you can get to it ;))

I thought it would be easier to do it that way too. When I take my car to get tyres I always tell them to jack it up from the front.

The only reason I don't mention the cross member first is because there's hicas/power steering lines running across the front of it. Put the jack in the wrong place and you've got problems....

Andy mate, did the adjustable upper links help? If so, where can I get some from and are they easy to set up?

I will def not let the AA man or anyone else jack me car up again , or if they are to do so, then I will make sure they have strict advice of where to Jack, thanks for the diagram Dave ;).

What wheel changing tools do you guys carry in case of emergency? Are the standard tools good enough for 18"s and a lowered car??

I only carry the standard tools and jack, and i'd say that the jack can go quite low, i'd have thought enough for a lowered Zed.

Cany just jack on a sill or seam in the body..gotta jack on something structural..had this on mine when I bought it but managed to sort it without too mutch difficulty...get it sorted and bill the AA...cowboys....

The tracking is well out though....cant tell from the pic but it could be the king pin inclination...donno if this is adjustable on a z...never thought about it...

I know you can get adjustable top bushes so it must be...if you are lowered then this would cause it....cant do one thing without the other afterall!!!

That aint rubbing on your tyre, its wear (no feathering at all!)

Let us know!

Jesus Mark! It's not good to let your tyres wear down to the canvas mate!

Shitter mate, bad luck.

Try here http://www.zcentre.co.uk/suspension/lkbrgs.htm for the link arms (I need one too as it happens but haven't got round to it).

Hi Alex,

I know mate, not good, especially seeing as I had the front drivers go on me the other week! Two nails in a really good tyre!!!

Have decided to stop using Dunlop SP9000's as I am sure their Jinxed! My rear two tryes started to rip where the tread joins the main tyre!!!! As if they were remoulds or somet!!! Shocking mate, so no more Dunlops for me!!

As for the upper link arms, its £430 for the pair as its a waste of time just getting one so I am gonna have to get both.....Mmmm, thats gonna have to wait a few months though.....credit card is full :D

Dave, I will have to get hold of a Jack and the standard wheel spanner doesnt fit inside my nut holes on my wheel!! I have to use a special socket!! Know anyone with a spare 300 jack??

Hi Vinz, I have stored your number in my phone mate and will call you over the weekend. R u gonna be about?

Splatt, yes mate def was tracking I cam confirm, just take another look at the pics of the close up of my wings and you can see the camber of the wheels is quite heavy!! Like Alex suggests, gonna have to sort the Adjustable Upper Link arms from the ZCentre....:( Means me intercooler is gonna have to be put back!!! :( Ah well....

Thing with the wheel geometry is that you have to consider castor/camber/king pin/track.....b'stard to get right....

Reckon you are right and the intercoolers will have to wait...better still....get another credit card?

Someone in the past jacked my car up on the crossmember and bent it so it rusted and had to get a new one for the MOT last year!
