When I try and connect to the internet with my laptop, I get Error Message: The page cannot be displayed. Seems to have occurred after I removed some pop-up software. Laptop is connected to a cable modem/desktop via a Netgear wi-fi router. The Netgear icons show a good internet connection but no pages are being displayed in the IE browser. Microsoft's website suggests a solution involving modifying the registry  , which TBH, is a little daunting with my limited IT knowledge. Before being ripped off by my local repair shop, is there anything I can try to resolve the problem. Running XP with IE version 6.

Cheers

System restore to a previous date when running well ?

go to start(taskbar) then choose run

then type in

Ping http://www.300zx.co.uk

If your connected to the internet / ISP

you should get a reply

On IE6 click tools menu then go to 'internet options' then the 'connections' tab and select the LAN settings button. Make sure the tick box for automatically detect settings is checked.

Also in the 'connections' area make sure it's set to 'never dial a connection'

Then try this -

Start - run

cmd

in the black box type

ipconfig /flushdns (enter)

then type

ipconfig /registerdns (enter)

Then if that dont work try this.........................

OK chaps, thanks for all the help so far. Will give it a go when I get home. However, if I'm still up in to the early hours, like last night, trying to resolve it, I think I may have to resort to Mac's suggestion

If you had some spy/scumware installed, it may have added in a proxy server.

Click Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings and check to see if its put a duff proxy server address in. If so, just untick proxy server and have another go.
