get down to thor racng mate and get them to set it up for you.

Right, this "may" help! First off the AVC-R has whats called a self-learn mode. This normally activates after altering the duty cycle and taking her for a couple of runs under heavy load...but it is notoriously un-reliable! Quite often it'll end up boosting way to high. Off the top of my head I believe the way to get rid of it is to go into the screen that says "Gears" or "Gearing"(?), you should see 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc with "O" below them, turn these "O's" to "X's". This should disable the self-learn mode.

To alter the boost level you alter the duty cycle %. Start at around 50 to be on the safe side and take her for a couple of runs under heavy load. Note the stored peak boost level and raise/lower the duty cycle % accordingly to what you want to achieve. Correct me if I'm wrong guys (I probably am!) but I believe 0.90mmHg roughly equates to 13psi. You may want to set her up above or below this figure, I don't know your engine spec (Edit: just read it in your sig! Doh!;)), but as always, each car is different, so if you hear detonation, ease off and lower the boost sharpish! ;)

As has been said though, THOR is THE best place to get it set-up. I've owned mine a while and I still don't know my way round all of it, which is why I'm going to get them to do mine! :D

Hope this helps,

Leigh.

Thanks Leigh your a star and I think I will take all of your advice and wait till THORDAY!! LMAO THORDAY, get it? Sorry, wheres my coat......:D

Anyway, I will follow your instructions Leigh and I do have 0's at the mo.

The reason why I am concerned is 'smithy' told me the TD tub's can take up to 28psi which I believe is 2lb's of boost? If I am wrong please correct me...

At the moment, when I boot it it goes up to about 1.2bar (is BAR the same as LBS? Boost novice here!!) which I think is abot 16psi? (14PSI per BAR?) And I dont know whether thats safe???????

Also, when I keep it there for about a 5 secs or more I start to hear like a rattling sound, like a zip in a really fast tunble dryer is about the best way I can explain it?!!

I have heard this sound before but I cant remember when! BTW, my tubs have done less than 2000miles.........

HELP ME!!! :)

1 bar = approx 14.5psi (pounds per square inch)

Therefore 28psi = just under 2 bar

1.2bar = approx 17.5psi

Rattling sound may be det :( - sounds like "nails being shaken in a tin"?

No worries mate :)

The AVC-R gives boost figures in mmHg (millimetres of Mercury) and kgf/cm^2 (kilogrammes of force per centimetre squared). The kgf/cm^2 reading is different from "Bar" but TBH not by an awful lot! 1.2 kgf/cm^2 is approximately equivalent to 17 PSI. The sound you mentioned "could" be cause for concern though. Detonation (at its worst) is sometimes likened to the sound of beans rattling around in a can. If you think you're getting this back off the gas and lower the boost, you don't want your engine grenading itself! Depending on their condition, stock injectors "can" max out at 15PSI...have you uprated your fuelling system? TBH I'm not the chap to give you advice on this, there are far more engine savvy people on this BB than me e.g. John Dixon (top bloke) ;)

Yes mate it is def detonating then just over 1.2bar....

Why does it do this? Can I have a techincal reply? Please! :)

So, I lower the duty then Leigh to lower the boost, can I do this as I am driving along or is this dangerous? :(

  • Author

No, the fuelling system is still standard and I am sure i can smell petrol from underneath the car?!?!?

You "can" alter the duty cycle on the fly but TBH, with what you've told me so far, I would definately not run the amount of boost you have been till you get it checked out more thoroughly so just drop the duty cycle anyway. After doing this, take her for a run and if you're still hearing det, wind the boost down and repeat until you don't! ;) In all seriousness though, any overt smell of fuel should be looked into immediately mate, detonation aside for a moment, it just isn't worth the risk. Hope you get it sorted bud :)

Leigh.

Hi Mark

My spec is very similar to yours now - John Dixon helped set up my Profec B and thought that 15 psi was a safe limit for the standard injectors and JWT chip. Not many on here risk more than that without 555's even though the tubs can take it easily.

Leigh, thanks for all the advice mate, VERY much appreciated.......will do that on the way home back up the M1 today.....;)

Hi Alex, any idea what BHP your pushing out? Looks like I am gonna need to find some bigger injectors!!! :)

Not 100% sure Mark, - I know I need an exhaust now as I have not had the chance to sort out a new system yet. I have an Apexi filter and also the SGP underdrive pulley which will help a little. My boost crontroller shows a peak of 15.3 psi, when on boost it drops a little and holds a pretty steady 15-15.1 psi.

Due to the restrctive nature of the stock pipes & cat, I'd guess at about 340bhp at the flywheel? (stands ready to get shot down by others )

I hope once I get the exhaust inc de-cat & tune the Profec a little for 360ish?
