I have the HKS front mount one, i think you can get it for about £1500 now and its a great intercooler, you can get cheaper front mounts i think z1 do one for about $1000

The hard pipe kit is only about 1 foot or so longer than the standard ones so i dont think it makes too much difference

unless your planning on running 6-700bhp+, then uprated sidemounts are the way to go.

unless your just doing it for the look!! ;)

sorry but power is the only thing on my mind. how long did it take to fit?

Large front mounted intercooler will make the performance worse with most mods.

Unless you are going to over 600+bhp straight away there is no need for it. To get over 600bhp well you have to spend an awful lot of money.

what would you recommend then my man???

surely if i have a large front intercooler i can put up the boost a few more psi??? does anyone agree

The Zed really needs better coolers to lower intake cherge temps after only a few mods IMO as the stock ones are really small with plastic end tanks.

Quite a few guys here now are running Greddy coolers in stock mount which are an excellant upgrade and more than capable of dealing with high BHP.

As Stu says over 600 BHP which is an absolute fortune to get is really when a front mount proves it's worth.

smithy

Smithy, cant seem to find them on ya site, so the big question....How much mate...;)

Nope because you acutally lose pressure inside the intercooler. The larger the intercooler, in general, the most pressure you lose. Its OK to lose 2-3 psi when you are boosting 28-30psi, because you need a lot of cooling because there is more air to cool, and it will be hotter coming out of the turbo . But when you are boosting 16psi, the psi loss in the intercooler will cause more of a performance drop than the extra cooling will gain you.

so the general consensus is that unless im running silly high boost and bhp go for the uprated stock mounted jobbie..... smithy which would you say to go for hks blitz or greddy???

cheers mate

Having looked at various comparisons of stock mounted upgraded coolers on US forums, it's really quite hard as no 2 engines are really the same. To be honest they are pretty much the same in performance wise none really stand out as FAR better than others. Having said all that Greddy are different to all the others in that they concentred on core design and thickness of the core, whilst the other makes went for higher cores whereby just over 3/4 is exposed to incoming air, leaving the rest sitting behind the indicator cluster and has on occassions caused fitment problems albeit minor when re-fitting the indicators and or front bumper. It also questions the effect as the outlet pipe is in the stock position for ease of fitment, but still has a few inches of core above it, unlike Greddy who have the outlet stil at the top and no core above it. So basically ALL the above have proved to be effective and no positive or documented proof 1 serves better than the other, however for me given the above the Greddy's just have the edge, personal choice or beliefs may be different from each person.

Price wise they all go for around the same kinda money, approx 750-850 quid the full kit dependant on make and supplier, some of which are on the forum.

Hope all this helps

You are looking the subject from the wrong angle.Intercooler is the last thing u think of. 1st get an idea of what power u want ur car and the rest will follow

An intercooler is a charge cooler, it, like, cools the charge, yeah? However, if you have uprated tubs, your charge will be cooler for a given pressure, so it's cool to start with and doesn't need cooling.

IOW you should do turbos before intercooler.

A bigger intercooler will always increase lag too!

so the general consensus is that unless im running silly high boost and bhp go for the uprated stock mounted jobbie..... smithy which would you say to go for hks blitz or greddy???

I've got the Greddy from Smithy however like everything. Once you do something you find out that you could have got the same thing cheeper. (Don't get me wrong Smithy is a fantastic Guy and has help me loads and i wouldn't here a bad word said about him his prices are better than most for Named Brands) However i've found somewhere who makes them to what ever spec you want and does a copy of the Blitz which is stunning and a mere fraction of the price. + the same flow rates. He's just made my New SS rad.

If you looking for power you really need to think what you want. + 360 to 400 bhp at the wheel is about as much as you'll ever be able to use. So unless your going drag racing there's no point. If you tweek the standard Tubs they won't last neither do the pistons unless you can eliminate denting completely. So decide where your going before you start throwing you money about. Speak to John Dixon. His motor was dinoed at about 370bhp at the wheel completely stock apart from one of his chips and a boost controller. The man knows his onions.

Its not just a case of bolt bits on and away you go. + Most people talk about 600bhp etc let me tell you a true 400 ish at the wheels is awsume and will get you into plenty of trouble unless you can really drive.

I've been looking for uprated coolers too that can be attached to the stock mounts, without any modification to the surrounding area . Only interested in increased efficiency rather than looks or brands. TBH, consider the big brands to be overpriced and would be interested to learn of anyone who can fabricate a custom jobbie at a more realistic price.

Wanna share some details Mark?

I also know that one of the Traders on this site uses this person to make Coolers and Rads and I don't want to step on his toes or fall out with him. So I'll speek to him first before I say anymore.

Don't worry I come back on this one though.
