I have just been looking about at engine builds etc and have noticed a lack of a MAF on one or 2 builds.

Can the car run withought it? If it cant what are they using and is it more reliable?

you can only do away with it if you're runnig a motec or dta type management system

You use a MAP sensor instead (manifold absolute pressure). Basically the ECU uses that for load sensing instead of a MAF.

Usually a MAF is more accurate and gives better driveability with the trade off being higher pressure drop through the inlet tract.
