The water level won't drop dangerously low if you keep an eye on it! There's a dipstick in the overflow tank, passenger side near the front. Looks like the washer bottle but it ain't.

Yes it is. My top hose inlet connection on the rad shattered and i lost about 5 pints, temp gauge did eventually alert me by rising slightly above half way, where it always sits!

Stock gauge isn't sensitive to temp changes.
