Can anyone tell me any symptoms for torque converter failure. Problem is that i have just fitted another box and i've had drive failure again   . I know how unreliable 2nd hand boxes are but i was wondering if there was somthing else that could relate to gearbox failure. My first box frazzled and had the burnt smell etc but this one is not smelling (yet!!) but keeps loosing drive. I turn the car off and leave it for a few hours and the drive comes back. On my last drive i put my foot down and total slipping  ,also theres a whining noise. Thinking of getting a S.E fast box but would go mad if it's the converter..

Torque converters are supposed to be pretty tough. Is it not worth checking the filter in the box sump for debris or silt from the friction materials? I heard that the fine muck could block up the filter leading to oil pressure falling away. Soon as you leave it a while some falls away only to get sucked up again once you restart. However the whining noise would be a worry. That was same as mine when my box expired plus burnt oil. Also when you re fitted did you check that the oil cooler lines were clear? Otherwise debris can come from there or the flow can be blocked leading to over heated oil.

deffo as WillieO says m8, that sounds like a blockage including the horrible wining noise, over 6 months ago i had the same from mine, and it turned out to be muck in the filter

I agree, and one problem as I see it is you fitted another box but didnt clean the old oil out of the converter and the oil cooler. So all of the muck is spread around again.

Strange thing is that i have just put a cooler on and i took the converter off and emptied it all out

Was your box knackerd??

no m8, a clean did the trick, i THINK after 6 months of "good" driving it

i would have known if it was knackered

gear change and everything is perfect, whereas before i lost all drive

leave it for half an hour or when cold and it was ok, but made the horrible wining noise, i guess it depends how long the torgue/box has been starved

But the converter needs flushing many times to clean it, (hope you did). No offence

No offence taken buddy but you may have hit the nail on the head. All i did was empty it and flush it once. Oh, well learn by mistakes. Car moved today but with a really bad noise

it may not be too late, a good flush, (hard to do properly, almost impossible incar) and clean the filter with new fluid might help.

Normally I feel that if your filter is blocked the box has had it, but you may have just spread round mucky oil, so maybe, just maybe.

Cheers for your help. The box is making a bad grinding/whining noise.

drop the pan m8

IF you have a drain plug? drain first probably not if it's an import, and you will see the metal mesh filter, undo and clean with petrol etc, and refit and top back up:)

cheers mate i hope its that ive rang my mate and he seems to think its somthing like that defo not the box gone as no signs over the last 8 months of it going .

its just sounds and feels like no oil pressure geting through to change the gears as you can see and feel its trying but very slow until it bites and gets into gear.

Just read this, sounds like a stripped splines on the stator shaft to me, on which the torque converter runs, which is not good.

The only sure way is to strip and have a look.

Raydetinue, why, if its the splines, does it work again after being left for a while. I know, the splines "repair" themselves if left standing but not very well so they get ripped off again after a short drive. Yeah, that must be it. Silly me. Lol
