I thought my car was detonating - a kind of rattling/crackling sounds at high boost (sound familiar?). Anyway, took it to a garage who said they would put it on a rolling road to confirm what was happening (I had already changed plugs, fuel filter and checked timing with no improvement). They came back and said they didn't even need to put it on the rolling road as they were so convinced that it wasn't detonation. They told me it was the left turbo making the noise.

The guy seemed a bit dodgy to me. He told me I should book it in asap as the car was dangerous to drive as there was some oil underneath which could catch fire at any time! Also that I would 'melt' the turbos if I continued to drive it!! They turned the boost down via the boost valves and now the noise seems to have almost but gone.

Has anyone else experienced the same sort of thing as me? Any Rattling or other noise at boost which turned out to be from the turbos? I would of thought the turbo would rattle pretty much all the time if there was too much play in it? Just wondering if I'm being taken for a ride here. Wouldn't want to change my turbos to find out that it was detonation after all and my turbos were fine.

Cheers,

Hi Darren,

I just wanted to say the fact that you've posted your thoughts on this garage would suggest you need to find another mechanic. You really need to have trust in your mechanic with a Z as most garages (including Nissan) don't have a clue with these cars. I'm sure somone on here should be able to post details of a good mechanic near you.

Good luck,

Cheers Vijay. You're right, I don't think I'll be going back to them. I put the car there as I just wanted a firm diagnosis on what the noise was. They are also an independant rally team so thought that they would be well clued up on things like detting with turbos. Maybe they are and all what they said is right. But I wasn't totally convinced.

Mechanics eh.

Hmmm... if your turbos are rattling surely they'd do that at just a few psi?

Seems to me that if you turn the boost down and the noise lessens, it's det from underfuelling...

Have you got any fuelling mods? When did you last change filter?

How much boost were you and are you now running?

Just an idea, not to sure what RR you have near High Wycombe, but sounds as if you need some place that knows there stuff, why not take it to G-Force in Aylesbury, not far from you, they will be able to tell you whats up,i remember having a bad rattle on my Z that Pete bought, turned out it was the nearside turbo heat shield had virtualy come off, hope its something simple like that for you.

Hi Zevans

This is what I thought too. No fuel mods as far as I am aware. I changed the fuel filter last week. Don't have an accurate figure for boost - just the stock gauges. They 'were' showing +14psi I.e. right to the end. Now I guess the needle doesn't go quite to the end so I reckon around 10-12psi.

Tony - I work pretty close to Aylesbury so that sounds like the best bet. I'll give them a call.

Thanks guys

Darren.

The same is with mine, i thought it was detonation and want to buy a fuel pump to cope witht the boost increase. Anyone got an uprated fuel pump for sale. What about spraying water into the air intake like imprezas. will this work?
