I have just been out in the Z after finishing putting another gearbox on. All was going fine; not going mad just tootling around the next village until i hit quite a steep gradiant. Thats the point when the gearbox seemed to slip. I lost 95% of drive :( .Managed to get to the top of the hill and checked under the bonnet and underneath the car to look for leaks. All was ok  Problem was that i was at the bottom another hill so i tried 1st gear and it drove as normal. The box i got hadn't been used for 2 years. Do you think its fooked or its bedding itself in.do you think i may need more oil? or could it be the torqe converter? Its an auto by the way. Thanks

Scoops thats what i though. It was my first proper run. Mac came round before i went and checked the level on the dip stick and he said it looked fine. So thats when i ventured out. Wonder if its because i gave it a proper run and the level dropped as the torque converter etc filled up because i emptied that out aswell. Ive only put about 6Ltrs back in.

if you have completly drained the auto system m8 including torque converter

youve not put enough back in, your a couple of litres short AT LEAST

Cheers buddy, i'll let it cool down and check in the morning. Hope i havent damaged the box :( Never ragged it though!!

make sure you dont put TO MUCH in though, as it will cause as much damage as not enough, best to warm the engine/box up, ie through the gears/park/n for about two minutes, then check it, top up a bit at a time and keep repeating the process

in the morning m8 check the cold level, and you will probably find it's low

as the torque will have taken its level

All i did was put a few ltrs in and start the engine. Then went between the different drives then put about 4.5 ltrs in. Went for a little drive then put another litre in. So you recon i need more oil. Hope so

yes with the torque m8 6 litres is not enough

have a smell of the dipstick m8, it will smell burnt if its been slipping/overheating, i doubt you've done enough to knacker it;)

First thing i did...the old sniff test. Ive had that experiance already with the frazzled box in the garage. That went on the A1 :( smoke included. Oooo i love these cars ;)

The converter takes no time to fill, and running it from park through the gears at a standstill wont make it any warmer either, it needs almost the correct amount of oil, then a gentle road test, and then check the fluid again. If its like every other auto thats, warm, running in park or neutral, on level ground. Checking it in the morning is a waste of time.

Autos fall out of gear when there is not enough oil in them, or the filter is blocked because then loose pressure. Simple.
