Hi guys,

Got a prob I needed some help on;

My cars been leaking coolant for a while, and I have been unable to locate where it is comming from.

Recently I did an oil changed, and whilst I was underneath I was getting dripped on, I look up and there is a pulley wheel at the center of the engine toward the bottom at the front (just bellow the fan). There was coolant dripping from the bottom of this.

So I suspected it being the rad pipes, that go into the front of the engine leaking, and dripping / running down onto this wheel.

I took the cambelt covers off fan shroud etc to get to them, and they are bone dry, the coolant was still dripping from underneath thought.

Im a bit think, but it looks like the pully is the water pump would i be correct?

Also I ave notice for a while when the car starts up it sounds like a belt slipping and is very very loud, when I rev the car it stops, I checked all belts and they are looking very new and good condition, also if you ask me they are over tight, no flex at all, so they couldnt be slipping because they are not tight enough, I suspect that if this is the water pump, for some reason it is seizing and the belt then slips round it.

Can someone shed some light on this for me please?

It looks as if I can get to it to take it off of the engine, it depends on how deep it is as at the moment, I now have the shroud and cams belt covers off, the radiator is out and the fan is off, so I have close to a a good foot of space infront of it.

Thanks

Steve

Yes it's the water pump alright.

I think they are about £70 or something from Nissan and should be replaced at about 60K miles.

Try Mike at MJP for one.

Not fitted one myself but sounds like you've done most of the hard work already.

water pump is easy to do, particularly with what you have already taken out of the engine bay :) The squeaking that you hear on start up, may be the viscous fan, which strangely enough sits on top of the water pump, I dont know if changing the water pump will cure it, or whether the fan needs to be changed also ???

Also watch its not the 2 short pipes to the heads. They are just above the water pump and can drip onto it making it look like the water pump. These are prone to failing every 3 or 4 years cos its hot in there. Also the water wets the belt making the screech. These short hoses are under and to each side of the top connection casting. You need a make up mirror and a torchto take a looksee just after switching off.

You can change these hoses in half an hour with the rad and fan still on if you have small hands and the right tools.

sounds like you are already there if you have the cam covers off,

just remove the 6 bolts from the water pump, and it should come off, I had to give my old one a tap with a length of wood because the old sealant had stuck it on tight, expect a few litres of water to come gashing out.

Mike feeney can get a water pump for aroudn the £70 I believe, but its possible that it just needs to be resealed.

the inlet and outlet pipes can leak also giving a similar effect.

You can change these hoses in half an hour with the rad and fan still on if you have small hands and the right tools.

I've got loads of tools but can't find a set of small hands anywhere.

Where did you buy yours?

Those small pipes are only a few quid so replace 'em while you're there.

Nice one lads, i'll take a looksie at that, just to clarify, the fan is attatched to a wheel, that is just above the one with the water on, the bottom one is the water pump yeh?

So in theory I just unbolt it and off it comes? I didn't see any small hoses, only the fat one that recess a fair way on the top just between where the cam covers were.

So ill check for these, gonna take another look tonight, I guess for 70 tho its worth replacing it anyway yeh?

Cheers again,

Steve

ah another thing slightly OT but still a problem for me!

Since the car has been stood it has also developed a leak of brake fluid between where the MS join the servo? I orderd a master cylinder seal kit, but someone informed me this might not cure it as it could be the seals on the other bit any thoughts?

Cheers again

Steve

Hi Steve,

I had a leak in the same place and the seal kit cured it :)

Vijay

I have an almost brand new water pump for sale, done 200 miles with it, takes about 4 hours to fit, nice and easy, yours for £40 :)

btw guys, dont you have to remove the upper and lower cam covers to get the pump off and the main pulley on the crank? i couldnt see any way to do it that didnt involve taking these off :(

Damn man I should have seen this sooner already ordered one off of feeney :(

How much is the brake seal kit?

Mine has been stood empty for almost a year and I was wondering if the seals might go. They obviously do.
