After spending the whole day finally dismantling my engine, I thought I'd share some of horrors that I came across:

Firstly, EVERY SINGLE injector connector, the two connectors above the EGR valve, and the knock sensor looked like this:

connector.jpg

...(And this may be the only time some of you ever see the knock sensor smile.gif Its in the most impossible place to reach - I have no idea how you'd go about changing it, without stripping your car to bits)

Not good, this must explain why the engine seemed to have its good and bad days! frown.gif

And the next picture makes me wonder exactly what my local Nissan dealer didn't tell me when they changed the spark plugs:

Doh....anyone got an idea how much these are? I'm going to call Intapart tomorrow for a secondhand price

Anyhow, off the bed now....

That is not funny! Pete at SE told me that the heads have to come off for the Det. sensor to be replaced.

Scarey!

AFAIK the det sensor can only be changed when both upper and lower intake manifolds are off (not the heads. The det sensor is nestled between the heads)..

I'll be doing mine when I have the manifolds off...

The coils are around 40$ at Courtesy.

Thanks,

I called my local Nissan dealer - £33 not bad at all IMO.

The heads don't need to come off to get too the knock sensor. Just(*) have to remove the intake collector and the manifold.

(*) Just...haha..my arse...its more of a job removing the collector than removing the cylinder heads! smile.gif

So Pete was talking crap then? I did say replace the Det. sensor, not just get to it...still same answer?

300ti2.jpg

Yup Tim - still the same answer...

Az

Hi Az me old matey,

So would this constitute an "eninge out" approach then as most are told when the Det. sensor comes into play???

300ti2.jpg

Nah Tim - you can replace the det. sensor just by taking the upper and lower inlet manifolds off - which can be done in car (albeit it's a fiddle with all the vac hoses etc that plug into the underside of the upper inlet manifold) - which is what I am doing at the minute..

See http://www.ttaz.org/tech/injectors for a tech on removing the upper inlet manifold (lower is considerably easier!)..

CheerZ mate, god there's some bollox about where these cars are concerned! As usual, people trying to milk yer bank account dry...does piss me off!!!

Hehe I can fix your Detonation Sensor for 89 pence.

Its called a 1 megohn resistor wink.gif

Granted - your engine will probably blow up if it was in safety boost for a reason, but I happen to think that the Det Sensor on VG30DETT is an evil work of Satan.

Aaron, mate, do me a psychologically benefitting favour wil ya, when you get the unholy bastard thing out will you mail it to me so I can perform some..ohhhhh... evil and rewarding ceremony on it smile.gif

As you've stripped down your engine and able to reach the det sensor I would replace it with a new one. Approx £75 from Courtesy

(Don't forget the harness)

PS A 1Meg ohm resistor works but IMO it's best to stay with a working det sensor smile.gif

Steve

Steve - don't worry, I plan on replacing everything that is even remotely easier to replace when I have the plenums off..

Det sensor, PCV valves, EGR valve, all silicone hoses, all coolant hoses, injector harness, coil pack harness..

And maybe pull, check & have ultrasonically cleaned the injectors... Do you all reckon that is worth doing? The car has 44k on the clock BTW (miles).. Can't afford an injector upgrade or I'd do that now as well, along with bigger blowers.. But those will have to wait until another time (and I'll pull the engine to do those anyway..)
