nzr audi a6 dash trouble !! help please !!

i have just bought an audi a6 1998 r reg 1.8t

 

and the instrument cluster has gone haywire !!

 

when i pull the ignition key out the whole dash comes alive and the temp needle goes to max???

 

the spedo or rev counter or fuel gauge dont work ??

 

where do i start to look i have checked all the fuses and are all ok!!

 

if anyone has had a similar problem please let me know how you sorted it
