Hi all,

Now thanks to Chris I've worked out how to ship my car back to the UK, my next headache is arranging insurance.

I've so far spoken to Egg Insurance (same as Tesco), Direct Line, Screentrade, and I've used the autotrader.co.uk insurance search engine.

The problem - no-one is even prepared to quote me a price. The reasons I've been given is

1/ My zero no-claims (I've lived in Japan for the last three years)

2/ The cars modifications (wheels, stereo, exhaust)

3/ Import car combined with modifications

My details:

Male, 26 years old, full UK license for 9 years, no previous claims or accidents, but zero no-claims. The car is garaged and driven about 10,000 per year. It's a 1989 Fairlady Z twin turbo automatic. I've owned it for a year and a half.

Can anyone in a similar situation let me know of a company that's prepared to quote me an insurance price. I'm looking for fully comprehensive insurance.

There must be people out there with similar conditions as mine. Please help me! I can't decide whether to bring the car home without at least an idea of how much insurance is going to be.

Many thanks!! :)

just tell them that you have returned the car to standard and see if they will quote you then! This is also know as telling a white lie.

Besides:- If your wheels get stolen, the insurance co' cant say that they were not standard and the same goes with the stereo. Exhaust, well, it's an import!

Good luck!

try a few other companies,

Houghtons - but i think they specialise if the zed is your second car

Hyperformance - Thats who i use, best quote i could get. Im 20

1stquote.co.uk - i got a not bad quote from them

Carole Nash

etc

Do a search on here for good quotes.

Just keep searchin, you'll get a reasonable quote eventually

Were you driving in Japan? Did you have insurance and a NCB (or equivalent) over there? I know you can have trouble if you've been driving a company car for years, and then try to get insurance on your own car. If you contact the previous insurers you can get them to send a letter confirming you have not had any accidents with them. Just a thought....

Bennets who are in the south can quote imports...you'll find most imports are done through brokers as the main/direct ins co's farm out the work 'cos they are after the astra/mondeo market

regards

If you click onto http://www.linney.org he has a list of insurance company's who will insure some real extreme Jap imports. Have a look at some of the motors he imports.

He still has pics of the Red Celica TRD with the action pack. Thats the one I imported for my missus

Sorry to everyone for the delay getting back - been away for the weekend.

About the insurance - I'd much rather be able to declare to mods - just the way I am I guess.

Thanks for the advice though.

i've tried the suggested sites and the best price I've had is about 1800 quid. Does this sound comparible to others' quotes.

One company was prepared to give me two-years no-claims for my driving time in Japan. That helped a lot.

Interestingly, putting my girlfriend on the policy also reduced the price.

Fitting a Tracker will save another 100 quid a year - i'm currently thinking about this one since I will also have to add a Cat 1. once back since all the car currently has is door locks. Japan is a nice county!

Anyway, thanks a lot to everyone who replied!

Yeah the base model tracker costs £110 a year subscription. £1800 sounds about right with no NCB, sticks though doesnt it :(

Hi Mate

I got a quote from a crowd in London, with maximum no claims and I'm cough"40"cough it was going to be £1200. They claimed that this is because the car is high powered and that should I damage it to repair or replace the uprated parts + more BS that I would have to start with no no claims bonus etc. I got a quote from a crowd in KingsLyn at £1400.

I then asked to speek to an underwriter at my existing insurance company and told them what I wanted etc and they agreed to insure me fully comp with an agreed replacement value of £18,000. Having said that I told them if they didn't then I'll move the rest of my business elseware and I do spend about £3,500 a year with them.

I'll grt you the names of the companies that quoted me if you like. This thought is the area where the club should be pushing for a club polocy.
