Have a zed in the workshop at the moment that had some unusual faults concidering where it had come from.

The owner had a water loss diagnosed by his local garage as a head gasket failure

A price to repair (£1,800) ish was quoted and work went ahead.

However after 2 months the garage still had not completed and when the owner complained they admitted defeat having repaired the gaskets etc they were unable to get the car started despite their best technicians efforts.

At this point they agreed to transport the zed to us and not charge the customer any money provided they did not have to see the car again ( fair enough)

The faults found were as follow

1 Cam belt wrongly fitted ( only one cam timed correctly)

2 No water

3 No power steering fluid ( empty)

4 Water pipes on the plenum base NOT refitted

5 Connectors for the variable cam solenoid and det sensor mixed up

6 No bolt fitted in the crank pulley

7 Almost all the vacuum pipes mixed up

8 Cable loom reinstalled awkwardly and stretched across the balancer bar

9 Alternator bolt sheard off but head glued back on to look intact

etc, etc the list goes on.

After correcting all the above and making a few adjustments on the ConZult the car started on the button.

I took out 10 minutes to ring the garage to let them know it was now running and what they thought about the faults in particular the cam belt timing been incorrect.

The service manager was quite rude about the customers car and called it a shed ( not true) he insisted they had done the repair as quoted and the non starting was due to the car been messed with previously? and the fact they had spent 50 hours on it and not charged a penny made it ok.

I suppose the owner has now at least got his head gasket repair done cheaply , well for the price of a new belt service + a few other bits but what is a bit of a surprise given the level of mistakes made on the rebuild is that the other garage is in fact a Nissan main dealer! .......... oops few red faces there me thinks.

I am not surprised there was no water in it considering there were no Plenum water pipes. It would have just poured out.

This is obviously a case the job too complex for them.

Perhaps a complaint should be made to Nissan HQ about them.

I thought Jeff said it was a local garage. Mind you, it wouldn't suprise me either way.

Doesnt surprise me.

my local nissan dealership wont do anything more than an oil change on a zed - anything major and it would have to go to a "specialist" nissan dealership in uxbridge.

dealers dont seem very knowledgable on anything over 2 years old! as i drove my 300 into the local dealer (first and last time) you could literally see all the mechanic's faces fall

A local garage, that is a Nissan main dealer is how I understood it.

Not really that surprised tbh which is a shame. I am a bit concerned though at the number of 'basic' checks that obviously haven't been done. I'm surprised there was even any oil in it lol. To be fair (if thats at all possible), look at the age of most of the mechanics in a Nissan workshop, they were still in babygrows when these cars ceased production.....

Theres only oil in it, cus they didn`t drain it out

I thought we were against slagging off other "garages" workmanship without all the facts?

I speak from experience!

All i got from Nissan in Leamington was we dont do Imports :xxx:'s So jeff stepped and did me work for me (nice bloke)

a mate of mine took his 3-4 year old mondeo into a ford dealership about two years ago to have somthing or other done to it. when he arrived the machanic said they would have to order a tool specially for the job because he had never worked on a car that old before!

More water pipes without clips on today and then just as it was all going so well have found they did not refit the drivers side turbo actuator at all! which leaves me with the awkward task of seeing if I can get one in now, not sure if it is going to be possible.

you're joking - there must be some blown turbos around that have an actuator you can nick - is that what you meant - how the hell did they leave off an actuator?

it sounds like it is probably a good job that it didint start.

Mmm yep as you say hopefully I can get an actuator with the turbo in place, can not see myself quite how they forgot to fit it?

you would have thought it was essential

Well if the actuator isn't there then the wastegates will just blow straight open, so no damage would be caused, just very little, if any boost.

You *should* be able to get the actuator on there, although the actuator for the drivers side turbo is on the block side of the turbo. Maybe make up a few special spanners and you should be able to get to it? Its gonna be fiddly.....
