Does anyone here know if off-timing has any influence on mpg's? I'm guessing that my timing is off (need to find someone with a timing kit)after having the timingbelt replace a few months back. I'm also noticing that my exhaust pipes are turning black ... possibly related? All of a sudden my mpg seems to have gone out the window. I just got back from Oxford (80mile journey) doing a very steady 75mph (on cruise control) and still went through more than a quarter of my tank! Seems excessive as I used to be able to get to London on that amount. Just seems odd to me ...

Later!

The exhaust goign black could have something to indicate you are running very rich.

What does that mean? I did an ECU check and only code 34 shows up (already had that for months ...) Does that mean that the Airflow sensor is buggered or something? Hope not coz I'm getting a JWT induction kit in a few weeks time ...

It means that more fuel is going into the cylinders than can be combusted by the available air (basically)....

Do a Mode-II heated O2 sensor diag on the ECU (its in ttnets tech) and check the operation of the O2 sensors.. Might be an idea to check the resistance of the heaters too..

I dont think timing being out (one or two teeth tops) would affed F/A ratio, but it would make it run very lumpy (it affects compression).. Any more than 1 or 2 teeth and you'd know about it bigtime (Mr Valve, meet Mr Piston Crown)..
