Warning light

The other day on my way home from work I had no power steering for about 20 seconds. This cured itself and so I ignored it. At the same time I notice that the kick down on the box was not working properly although the engine was running fine and reving ok. I stopped turned the engine off and on the the 'power' light for the auto box flashed about 6-7 times then stayed off and all returned as it should.

WTF does this mean. Is my engine/gearbox about to blow it self to pieces or am I panicing for nothing.

Any help appriciated.

Tim

I suspect the speed sensor is the culprit.

It may be a bad connection, but the box gets its speed from it, the power steering uses it and I think the little fan above your head by the courtesy light does too (joke!) I think its located on the side of the transmission, although unsure as to which side....Good luck

As Bilky says - speed sensor or speed sensor wiring.. Is yours a jap import Tim? The speed convertors can go bad causing similar problems.. My advice - clean every electrical connector you can get your hands on first smile.gif

I agree, I had my speedo conversion replaced then removed only to find it was the speed sensor in the end.

Speedo used to drop to 0 sometimes too.

Tim, what speed were you doing when the power steering stopped working ?

I have had this problem for about 2 years now, and it is normally when i have been stuck in traffic for ages, and the car is getting hot

had no luck diagnosing it until tonight, when Darren the mechanic mentioned something it might be.

we will be looking into it and i'll let you know.

i thought it might be speed sensor originally, but i get no other symptoms whatsoever, and the speed sensor feeds a few different things...

The power steering cut off in a car park when I was driving out of a space so was going from standstill to max 15mph before it came bake on. Not had the problem sinse so I am hoping it was just a dodgy connector

CheerZ for the info anyhow. I am going to check the speed sensor this weekend
