Is it just my car or are all Zed's brakes cr@p when cold? I was driving down the road this morning & some fooker pulled out in front of me as per usual. I stamped on the brakes & next to nothing, pretty scary to be honest!

Thats probly your pads mate - what have you got on the front? Either that or you need to bleed the lines.

You haven't got EBC red stuff in there have you????

brakes schmakes, they just slow you down......

I think I've got dot 4 or 5 brake fluid & the pads might be Halfords :slap: :nono:

Where can I get some good pads from at a decent price?

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Never again.

Yach - Halfords own?

Lots of people like Porterfields or Ferodo DS racing pads. Steer clear of EBC pads - especially red stuff theres a common theme on them as you can see above and having had them on mine I agree - dangerous when cold damn good when hot. I've got the Ferodo DS pads and quite like them.

Change them ASAP.

If you've every really cooked the pads at some time then they might be breaking up and the resin bonding agent all burned. Worth spending on new pads anyway.

You can get normal road use pads from Lucas Girling for about £25. just done a set myself.

Lucas pads? I bought a set of them from Halfords once and they where THE most dangerous pad I have ever owned - they faded into nothing as soon as you got any decent heat into them!

I had ferodo ds on my zed too - well impressed, much better than nasty ebc....

lol I swapped from stock brakes to R33 GTR (calipers disks and pads).

My stock brakes were kack and I had fairly decent pads on them. When I upgraded I didn't feel any difference at all. When I put my foot right down I couldn't get the ABS to kick in or the wheels to lock up. It was scary. I thought this can't be right. I took the EBC red stuff pads out (that I got with the set up) and put some portfields in. The difference is amazing. They now feel really responsive and I don;t know how I drove without them.

If anyone here has EBC red stuff pads on their car I would highly recommend swapping them for some portfields.

Are these not designed for racing conditions though? (sh1te cold but effective hot)

Problem is the EBC green stuff pads which are for smaller hot hatches really - arnt up to the job properly on our cars as they are so much heavier and we tend to go that bit quicker. So the next step to improve braking are the Red Stuff's but they are dangerous when cold so your'e between a rock and a hard place with EBC so its best to steer clear.

Does anyone know if Mintex or Unipart pads are OK?

I was looking at Ferodo ds2500 pads, they look like the muts nuts but they're £130 which is a bit more that I can afford at the mo. Might get some when i have more dosh.

I got a few sets from Phil at C&S Wood in Manchester for about £35 per set - just normal unbranded pads - they stopped fine but the wear wasnt as good as the Ferodos so you may have to replace them more often - but they stopped well for the price.

I've ordered the Mintex ones, £30 front £37 rear + Twa.. :slap: + VAT!

Dunno why the smaller rear ones would be more expensive than the front ones

Cheers

I've got Mintex and they seem OK - garage recommended them and they rally Imprezas.

I got a set of semi metallic front pads from Mike @MJP (traders section) for about £72 with vat and delivery, nice pads.

John

I just finished a set of Mintex on grooved 3g discs and they were fine as far as I could tell - got about 20K miles. Bilkys got me worried about these Lucas ones but so far so good. Some harrys ones on my other car stopped braking when cold and when I took em off they were crumbling away even tho there was loads of meat on em. Had given them a good roasting tho. But not into totally antisocial driving so not tested to extremes.

If they seem OK then stick with them, the Lucas ones I got from Halfords would fade very badly when enthusiastically braking from high speed for slow corners - was very disconcerting to say the least - I binned them after a couple of months!
