The O2 sensor is binary, so to speak - the low signal means "help me I'm lean" and the high signal means "help me I'm rich".

So you should see it go hi-lo-hi-lo-hi-lo as the ECU tries to keep it just right. If it's not doing that and stuck on lo it (or the connector or the loom) is fecked.

You might feel this as hesitation on part throttle at low (

When you are driving hard the ECU completely ignores the O2 stuff as keeping emissions down when using all the horses is a lost cause!

....however if there was an air leak/fueling problem, then the O2 sensors would be jammed on lean and would *appear* faulty when infact they were doing exactly what they're suppsed to do. ;)

...and the ECU doesn't use the O2's above 3k because they are too slow to be used for closed loop control ;) Wideband O2s are another story altogether and can be used acurately throughout the whole rev range :) Did anyone see fifth gear the other week where the bloke bought michael schumachers old F1 car? They showed it with the engine cover off and you could clearly see the O2 sensors in the manifolds :)

Sorry matey,

as regards the voltage thats a tough one because every car I read is different the main thing is that they are bouncing from rich to lean when you are holding the throttle at 2-3k if one is not moving or moving much slower then its lazy , most I see have one that moves very quickly and one that moves very slow if at all , the other thing is to make sure the car is up to temp before testing.

the main thing is to test them at 2-3k not at idle
