Has anyone fitted these? Do they cause lots of vibration & do they break up after a while?

I was just thinking about the same thing!!... Since tearing my standard ones the engine feels horrible when pulling away or when taking my my foot of the accelerator too briskly - it feels like its going to jump out the engine bay!!! (This of course being the ONLY downside of adding more power!)

Have you found anywhere that sells them? That Austrailian site sells polyeurothane ones - but they're well expensive.

Yeah. I've just bought some from Smithy. They're made of solid Aluminium(I think!) with a threaded bolt at either end (no rubber at all). I'm just worried that due to the gearbox end being able to move still that eventually one of the bolts might shear, wear or become loose. Also I'm worried that it might be like driving a tank!! unless the subframe mounts absorb the vibration before it's transmitted to the shell. Lots of unknowns here really. Can they be removed easily once the engine is in place?

you can also get urethane gearbox mounts ( or solid if you wish!) from SPL

I was looking at Z1 prices for the urethane one and they were about the same as new stock ones from courtesey

When you say the engine feels horrible when pulling away, what do you mean by that, is it lots of vibrations? just wondering if mine are shot too :(

From the guy who was to have the fastes Zed in the US sometime ago mate.

"If your Z is over 450 RWHP, or you have a NOS spool up kit, you will need SGPs solid Motor Mount Kit to stop hitting the Firewall under Hard launches. With an external Wastegate set-up, you can damage the exhaust manifold under high boost as well. These will stop the damage!"

** We have even seen Dimples put in Z hoods without our kit, The engine moves that much with the stock rubber mounts!**

cheers

Wow! I don't want no dents in me hood! And they can only be good for future mods. I removed my 2 engines last week and 3 out of the 4 mount cups just stayed on the car!!!! Don't trust standard ones at all after seeing that!!

Thanks guyz for your comments.

There's no vibration when crusing down the road, but if I have to step off the gas during acceleration, the engine really jumps as the engine breaking causes the engine to lean on the other mount (acceleration will cause compression on one mount, tension on the other, and visa versa for decelleration)

When the engine was out last - both mounts had less that 50% of the rubber still adhered to the aluminium! (The hooked edge on each mount is the saviour when the rubber completely detaches itself - since the engine would only be held in place by the boost pipes and gearbox otherwise - which IMO is what I'm experiencing)

Does this help??

years ago when I used to put "big" engines into "little" cars I used to use a good old fashioned chain to limit engine movement under hard acceleration. 99% of the time the chain is slack, so no vibration is passed to the car, but under full throttle the engine moves, the chain tightens, and the load is taken from the engine mounts.

Got the idea from the Yanks, funny how old ideas can be forgotten

:( sounds all too familiar, stepping off the gas suddenly when accelarating hard feels like the car is kangarooing! another thing on the list of things to do then.

Can the mounts be done with the engine place? (attacking from underneath)

Both times when I've put the engine in the mounts are already on the engine. So not entirely sure, perhaps señor Duff can shed some light??...

beetlejuice beetlejuice beetlejuice..

Engine mounts CAN be done with engine still in :)

I read on one of the U.S performance parts sites that they had found almost every Z they got in had torn mounts.

When I took my engine out one was ripped off and the same with the car I got the new engine from.

I've ordered the poly ones from Z1 now and they apparently have a metal support around them that limits their extension and holds the engine if they ever did split.

The chain idea sounds good/similar.

I had a mk3 cortina with a V8 in it, aand when you booted it the engine touched the steering UJ, so you had to make sure you were pointing where you wanted to go as you had zero steering, jammed it solid, hence the chain idea.

I recently removed 2 engines, 2 mounts off 1 engine were in 2 halves and on the other, 1 was in 2 halves but the other was half ripped so I'm not surprised you read that! I'm gonna give the solid ones a blast cos I don't want the engine putting dents in the bonnet. The Missus will just have to put up with the vibrations - he he!!

I fitted nismo engine and gearbox mounts to my S13, truly awesome, gear changes more positive & the engine doesn't wobble around all over the place anymore.

You obviously get more vibration though but that's like saying I want good handling but don't want to upset the nice ride.

I'd rather have a car that's easier to drive and an engine which will stay in place and put up with the vibrations. Let's face it most of us only take them out for a "blast"! Thanks for all your comments everyone.

Why would the missus complain 'bout those vibrations

But serious, I always thought solid engine mounts were pure race and impossible to drive on the street due the shocking and vibrations?

Or is it quiet ok on the Z?
