I thought the J spec had separate side lights but the UK spec didnt

UK still has the small sidelights next to the indicator lenses and depending on the year it also has dim dip where the headlight bulbs get dimmed by a resistor in the circuit when ignition is on - maybe thats what you mean.

My 92 UK series II has dim dip headlights - switch to sidelights and the headlights dim and you also have sidelights as well.

yes mate that's what i was looking for.

My dilemma is this - i'm putting on a new nose with no seperate side lights - Will the dim headlights / sidelights on the UK car suffice. In which case is it as simple as buying a set of UK lights and wiring them up in UK fashion?

secondly if i then convert this set up to HID will it still perform the funtion of sidelights?

I dont think you can configure HID for dim dip. They are either on or off. I think you'll still need separate sidelights. Even if you dont do HID I do not think the regulations allow dim dip only in place of sidelights as you would not be able to leave it parked with sidelights (dim dip) on without ignition on as well. Another possibility might be white leds inside the standard headlamp housing or a ring of them like a beemer! Someones bound to do that soon.
