I have a dilema, Ive persuaded my dad to get rid of his faithful rover and treat himself to a Jag as at 64 he needs an auto gearbox.

I told him id need £6 to £7k plus his rover so i think i have upto £8.5k to spend, could possibly push him to £10k.

Bear in mind that i will get to drive it i want the best, ie fastest!!!, i can find.

Ive discovered that the XJR was a supercharged 4.0 V6 untill 1998 when they used the V8 instead.

With the budget i have i will struggle to get a 1998 model XJR so may have to settle for the V6, but could manage to get a normal XJ8 but id like the fastest i can find.

Does anyone know if the V8 is meant to be alot better than the V6 or would the smart money go with the normal V8?

Or maybe if anyone knows the name of a Jag forum, if one exists!!!

All help appreciated.

Sorry bud, just realised thats a yank site!

Sorry fella

Rich:D

best jag site i know is this one m8, will take you a week or so to read the different catagories, before you may want to ask questions

its a brit/yank forum but best out there, and loads of links to the others

http://www.jag-lovers.org/

v6 vs v8, its like anything m8 personal choice, all i would say whichever jag you buy, JAG service history is important, might sound like stating the obvious, but with jags its more top priority, ive had jags for many years and ive seen very few that go round the clock UNLESS serviced PROPERLY,

the good thing re the auto your looking for, very few auto boxes match jaguars:)

for your cash you'll deffo find an xj8, but like the zx look at many, drive them and you'll soon see the difference between a dog and a good 'un

my current jag was a model i was after for many many many months, and i travelled all over the country until i found the right one

i drove mine the other day for the first time since garaging it, and it was dream to drive, so smooth no noise, a different beast altogether than the zx, deffo not as much fun or the smile factor of the zx, but turns as many heads as the zx,

lol after a rover your dad will love the jag, have a read of that forum m8, it may help you make a decision, if you can read through the bs from across the pond, but they do love jags

good luck in your search m8 :)

I love jags, still got V8250 , but when it comes to the modern ones i don't think that there the best in there class. try a GS lexus they do seem a better car. just don't have the name

Hi bud

I think you will find there is a straight six as well as the v6 it is based on the AJ16 engine they ceased production in 97 cracking motor by the way great fun to drive.

There is a problem with the v8 engine cars (early ones) up to Sept 2000

the nikasil plating on the cylinder bores is corroded by the sulpher content present in fuel, when this happens you have engine failure!.

the cars affected are :-

vin numbers xj8 from 812256 to 878717 inclusive.

most of the affected cars have been delt with (new engine free of charge).

so if buying an early modell check that it has a history and has been looked at by Jaguar.

hope this info does not put you off the jags as they are great cars (i have 2)

hope this is some help to you when looking for one.

Hi B19rks

The XJ series only came with the straight 6 AJ6 engine, then the new V8. (Only the older models had the V12 and the V6 is found in the S type or newer XJ6s)

If the budget won't stretch to an XJR V8 (supercharged) you can still get a decent older XJR straight 6 supercharged for a good price and they are still fekking fast - almost as quick as a ZX with 0-60 in 5.7, 0-100 in 15.1 top of 153

The V8 XJ8 engine was (until the new 4.2 just out) 290bhp IIRC and they are still no slouch despite the weight. I'd still go for the XJR-6 over the non supercharged V8, though.

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

My dad had a jag xj8 98 3.2 (I think)r reg. This was a cracked car, he and I enjoyed driving it. That V8 sounded like a nascar at full chat. I was lucky enough to go on a jag open day, drove all the cars. Best 1 was the xjr V8, *** down the A47. woooohooooo, Nearly hit the limiter...The speed limiter that is.

i know of someone by me selling a new shap xjs 4.0 manual on a l plate for around £6500 rare car in manual, would have it myself if i did not have the z

Cheers for all the help, have decided that im going to get one on condition rather than model so ill have to see what grabs me out of an XJR6 or an XJ8 as the XJR8 is out of the price range, and if i was to find one for that price it wold have to be buggered!!

Cheers Ed for the useful info on the V8, im going to look at a few this week so ill let you know how i get on.

I had a cracking slammed Jag before the ZX!

The V8 is by far the best engine, however the straight 6 is also a great lump but not as torque-esque as the biggie!

Having driven the supercharged version Id have to say you and your father will have hours of fun on the motorway pulling away from those annoying RS boys who've flown up your ar*e in their supercars! Its a really fast car for such a heavy beast but unfortunately straight-lining is all Id advise... the big cat although MUCH improved is still a bit wallowy in the suspension set-up to be chucking around.
