Hello peeps

Im hoping but not holding my breath, that someone will give me an alternative to what I already suspect. All help & comments VERY gratefully recieved before I pay out large bills for the Turbo job...

I have a '91 ZX tt auto and when I first fire her up if I leave her running she will start smoking blue, leaving me thinking TURBO's NEED DOING (aaarrrgg!!) HOWEVER upon driving off she clears totalluy and when running around and even booting there is no smoke. When I leave her Idling AFTER a run she will happily sit for three or more minutes and NOT smoke. YET EVERY time I start her and let her idle the smoke appears. Under harsh accelleration she boosts well with no hesitation and no smoke. After a few days driving I ALWAYS have little oily spits like a fine dust over the rear valance. IS IT THE DREADED SEALS or could it be something else?

If it IS the seals anyone had a good result for a cheap source for both turbos and the actual job itself.

It could be the PCV valves - they tend to wear out or get blocked up and need replacing. Mine smoked abit for a while on idle only and then it cleared up - You could try cleaning the throttle bodies out with carb cleaner and see if it unblocks them at all......

Mine had this a while back but it cleared... This PCV valve job... expensive?

The following link explains a little about the job above. Doesnt mention anything about price though...

I think to buy all the parts from Nissan UK and do the job yourself is around £100

Best going to Mike Feeney at MJP in the traders section - you'll get them cheaper there ;)

Just do my pcv this weekend as I was getting some smoke on idle and a bit when running as well. Did the pvc ,engine flush, new filter and oil change the car sounds a load better on idle and is running a sweet as anything

cheers guys. Anyone has similar problems to me and had this done to sort it?

The thing is guys if the turbos where shot surely theyd smoke more of the time or not perform so well rather than just smoking on start up? THATS what I dont understand

Nice one Wez - you've given me a bit of hope now, mines been smoking for a while. My PCV kit has been lying on the bedroom floor for months  I'll have to get it fitted :)

yeh i get smoke on start up,clears after 4-5 min still boosts very well, then had a whining sound which is normally turbos, but turned out to be viscous fan coupling so check the small ones out before jumping to the ones that make u cry with worry

Hey I think Im gonna try and get hold of a set and do mine!

(mind you there seems to be a delay in getting hold of them from the forum site I see...) Mines already had the obligitory engine flush though.

I was foxed too as to why it only smoked when first idling yet not on boost or that there was a lack of any other usual turbo wear... Lets hope this clears it for us all!

Im guessing that if its not these little bad boys then it probably is his seals BILKY? And what about the residue on the back of his car??

The PCV jobbies has given me some hope and I will do these asap.

I have an auto-turbo timer on the car and after a good run it sometimes allows the car to idle for around 3 minutes and the car still refuses to smoke even then... ITS ONLY when its turned off and then either turned on again in a while or next morning. I cant start the car and let it idle for more than a few seconds when its not been used for a few hours without it starting to smoke blue.

If the PCV's dont cure it then it will be the turbo seals....Alternatively how thin an oil is in the engine - thin oils like 5w or even 0w weights are known to leak more for obvious reasons try a thicker oil like a 10 or a 15 and see if that stops it.

Just spent AGES searching through all the old posts (more people should use this REALLY USEFUL "search" function prior to posting the same ol' questions...thats not a dig to anyone here, weve all beeen guilty of it at some point!)

Theres alot about this but each case seems to be a little different with regards to when it actually smoked. Not many have followed their posts up with their results (maybe an idea folks!)

Id like to think this guys problem is his PCV's... Correct me if Im wrong but isnt a classic symptom of Turbo-Seal Failure the car smoking when brought to rest AFTER a run when everything stops moving alowing the oil to seep?

My Alfa does this starting from cold, its the valve stem oil seals like Paul said, not a problem other than looks ugly!

Does anyone know why blocked pcv valves causes blue oily smoke? I know it does but why? How does oil/fumes get in the cylinders ? It does when the re-breath system is working correctly anyway doesnt it? I would have thought it should just blow the dipstick out.

Anyone??

Im interested in this point as I feel it would go some way to advising peeps with future PCV versus Turbo Seals queries which way to lean first.
