Hi,

I don't get to use my 300 a great deal so tend to leave the negative cable off the battery terminal to stop the battery draining.

I reconnected this so I could take the car out at the weekend but when I started the car up, the "Check" warning light stayed on, there was a high pitch buzzing from the rear of the car, the cooling fan came on straight away and it seemed to have trouble keeping the revs up sometimes stalling.

I think the high pitch buzzing could be the fuel pump, is it likely it will need replacing?

Any ideas what may be causing the other problems?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The rev problem and the fan coming on points to the water temp sensor failure. As a fail safe the ECU turns the fan on all the time when it cant detect the water temperature. Also, if the water temp sensor is not working correctly it can make the car almost impossible to start up and when it does, runs like a dog and you have to keep using the accelerator to stop it from stalling.

Try checking the connection to the water temp sensor. Give the contacts a clean, take the sensor out and give that a clean too.

Look at this page if you dont know where the water temp sensor is.

Hi Stuart,

Thanks for your advice (2 1/2 years too late - I know!).

The problem I had back then sorted itself after a period of the battery being disconnected. However, it's reared its ugly head again....

I've removed and cleaned the water temp sensor and connections, it seems to idle alot better now but the fan and check light still come on. I don't get the high-pitched buzzing now.

When I ever-so-slightly touch the throttle the revs drop off but it doesn't stall, a bit more pressure brings the revs up as expected. Could this indicate an issue with the air/fuel mixture?

I'd love to get this sorted for sure so a trip to the local garage might be on the cards, although I'd rather sort it myself.

Thanks very much

John

First thing I'd do is an ecu error check ::
