My aircon works fine, not icy cold, but eventually cools the car. I was wondering if anyone knows someone who can put the original R12 freon in, I know its banned, but someone may have some left. From what Im told, the new stuff just isnt as good. Its the same problem with fridge freezers too.

You won't get anyone responsible installing it now ! I actually acquired a couple of aerosol cans of R12, plus a can of the lubricant from a friend who was given it by a Toyota dealer - and I'm hanging on to it until it's needed ! LOL :D

its illegal to regas with R12, even if theyve got some left over.

iv converted mine to R134a & you wont notice the difference

Thanks Paul,

It may be illegal to regas with R12, but no one would ever find out.

My car is a 1992 model, so I guess it has R12 in it, unless its been recharged here in England in the last few years. Are there any give-away signs its been regassed with the legal stuff ?

Which refridgerant do I need that will be super cold and wont harm my system ?

Thanks

John

the evaporator chills down to about 2-4 deg c, temp at the air vents should be around 6-8.

the R134a is every bit as good as the R12, a/c here is freezing cold, but the compressor makes such an awful noise you'd be crazy to turn it on :(

Is something wrong with your compressor ? Mine does not seem noisy.

John

yeah its knackered :( Macca was gonna donate me his but ive heard nothing so far, not to worry.

If you change gas, then you need new seals on the pump as they arnt compatible.

Apparently they have a gas that is compatible with the old seals.

Not entirely true. many years ago they said you had to replace the compressor, seals etc.

you can now get a conversion kit, which basically consists of the newer valves, & conversion oil which is suitable for R134a & converts the old oil at the molecular level to be compatible (this is where the problem lies - the old oil doesnt dissolve in R134a)

fit the kit, gas it up (new reciever/dryer recommended) & off you go!! :)

My car is going in for a timing belt service on Monday and to get a replacement compressor fitted (thanks Jock!). Thinking I should be getting this kit fitted to. Guess I may have left it too late now to get hold of it for Monday.

Where do you get these kits from? How much do they cost?

Cheers

David
