Ok...moving on from the depression of my last post, I've decided that rather than sell her, I should keep her, but to try and get certain jobs done cheaper...i.e. by me and a mate!

The first job I've got on the list is to replace the brake discs (all round) with something new and better than the stock Z discs (which feel p1ss poor). I've looked on 3G's web site, and seen the 20GR ones (which they said are for the more powerful cars). Anyone know anything about these, or know of any good alternatives? I'm basically looking for something thats good, with some good pads, but ones that I dont have to change every 100 miles! (I think its got black stuff pads on at the moment, fitted by Jeff at ********).

I'm point to be taking help from the service manual CD from Z centre, but before I receive that, anyone know if its an easy job on a Zed?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

the discs are pretty easy to change the only problem is that when going for 20gr discs your still gonna eat away at your pads, why not just get better pads? ive got red stuff pads cant really fault them......

have you got the cd manual it will show how to do it on there!!!!!!!!!

Will have the CD manual soon (on order). Don't red stuff pads wear away quick? Or am I thinking of green stuff?

no not really, not that ive noticed anyway i had green stuff before and i did 7000 miles before i upgraded to the red stuff wanted last minute braking on islands :hyper:

pitty you ordered your cd would of done you a copy and met you somewhere to drop it off as i only live down the road :slap:

have you tried cleaning the calipers and changing the brake fluid on your standard set up, you will find it improves the performance markedly

I have just recived my 3G discs - not fitted yet but they look good quality. I went for the RS-10 on the front, and 10-GR rear. Also got the Porterfield pads which are very good by all accounts on both standard & skyline set-ups.

For street use the zed's standard brake setup is perfectly adequate. People are fooling themselves if they think they need slotted/drilled discs, etc.

Rebuild the calipers, put on a good set of pads and that will be fine. I did my front brakes last week, took about 4 hours (taking my time) caliper repair kit from Nissan - £42, semi metallic pads from Mike @ MJP - about £70 with vat and delivery. I should have bought the shim kit, the coating was starting to peel of the slotted shim, but copper grease applied to both sides of the shims so far has eliminated the brake squeel.

Ok, this could be a dumb question (possibly in a series of many!), but the last time I did anything more technical than top the oil up was about 17 years ago while doing my one year YTS as a mechanic (which I didn't stick at!)...anyway...is it a good idea to have different grades of disk on front/rear? I quite like the idea of some decent disks, probably from 3G, with some of the Porterfield pads. Where can I get the pads from (didn't see them o their web site), and how much are they (roughly)?

Thanks

Porterfield pads are avaliable from Smithy.

You should subscibe to the club, as then you will get a better price! (from Smithy and all the other club traders)

Prices were around £150 for the full set, but that was a GB price.

Got the 20gr 3g on the front only last two years and they are fine. At that time they cost about the same as Nissan stock. Still only the Mintex pads although they are due to be changed soon. They make a slight rrrrr noise if you brake hard from high speed. No more dust than normal either surprisingly.

Mines also needed the calipers rebuilding - stuck pistons both sides. I think thats what quickly warped the previous new Nissan stock discs. Bitch to re seal as I had to re fit calipers with no discs and G clamps holding the free pistons so I could hydraulic out the stuck ones. £35 for seals and hours and hours to free off.

Stock discs on the rear are more than adequate

So works fine now. Only picky if you are that way inclined is with 18" wheels they look tootsy.

Cool. Think I might try something similar. Thanks for all your help everyone.
