The 2nd and 4th gear slightly crunch every now and then, does this sound like a gear box or a clutch?

Featured Replies

Is that a new gear box then?

that should make it run smoother, but it does cuase higher wear to synchros

yup, sounds like a syncro problem, its a new gearbox or rebuild im afraid.

We discussed this a few weeks back when I asked about my manual that crunches only on 4th to 5th change up unless done veeeeeeery slowly.

In the meantime I've heard other reports about Redline MT90 not being any help – and in this MR2 it made it worse! HERE

Is there anyone on here who can really confirm that it works when you use the car as it was intended? Would be nice – here's an example why:

A couple of weeks ago in Germany, I was cruising on the Autobahn at an indicated 155mph (effortless) and came up on a yellow Porsche GT3 who was doing around 145mph. I went by him, but I don't think he liked it because the next time I was baulked by a slower vehicle down to about 125mph, he closed up to my back bumper to show he wanted past when the road was clear. I wasn't going to argue as his car is clearly quicker – if he wants to drive erratically to prove a point I don't care. When the slower car moved out of the way, I floored it and immediately moved over to let him go. It just would have been nice to show him how quick the Z really is – as it was I had to do a looooooooooooong up change which rather spoilt it :(

Still not had a chance to establish vmax – had it up to an indicated 270km/h (= 167mph) and was still rising when I had to slow for traffic. This car eats continents – pity you can only do that legally in Germany.

Look at the cost of a replacement box, it may be cheaper than the re-con!

Around 2.2K from Nissan

Fook! err, maybe not then, depends if you have to pay out for hire cars for months and months and months while there waiting for parts from Japan  still the garage keeps saying 'tomorrow' so you don't buy a banger.

From what I've heard the redline MT90 only really helps if you've got the crunching when dropping from 5th to 4th with series I Zeds. The problem with this particular change was apparently due to a manufacturing/design fault. It certainly helped when I had this problem with my first Zed

Downchanges are no prob on mine – it's only up from 4th to 5th that needs time –*I thought this was due to the design fault too and "curable" with MT90, but now I'm not so sure. :(

get a good gear oil and learn to double declutch if you dont want to get a rebuild for a while ;)

Steve,do you still do Castrol oil?

Hey mac, only just seen this, not spoke to the guy in ages, last time I went to pick some up (september) I crashed my car en route, Ive just got the money for the car too! swift service eh!

Anyways, Ill speak to him soon and let you know. But that castrol classics site is a good price - espcially at the volumes you buy, maybe email em see if they can do yr a deal ;)

Thinking about it...have you been putting that last lot on your toast or something!?! its gone a bit quick!

LOL No mate I still have loads left, was just asking for future ref;)

I paid about £700 for a recon box, which still isn't perfect, but I was told a new one was £1500 back then (about 8 months ago) - can you get new boxes that aren't from Nissan?

(fitting and all the rest brought it to around £1400 I think)
