Have a problem with my power steering. At low speeds it occasionally (but increasingly often) just cuts out. The other symptom I have – which from previous posts I’ve seen I guess is linked – is that at speeds any less than about 20mph my speedo needle just drops to zero.

Is this most likely to be speed sensor or kph to mph converter thing playing up? If it’s the speed sensor, is there likely to be a magic contact cleaning type fix or is it another credit card job??

Cheers

It SOUNDS like the speed sensor to me, I had very similar problems, on mine the sensor kept working its way out. All I did after about 5 times pushing it back in, was to clean it and glue it in:D works fine now!

The symptoms for the speed sensor not working and the speed converter playing up are the same. If its an import I would say its the speed converter as it is the case for most imports with these problems.

Well, if there is a chance it can be sorted by refitting the speed sensor, I will give that a go first. Was there a picture somewhere showing the location of it?

Yeah i think its the best thing to try before anything else, easy enough to do.

its just like a round bung, mine popped out about 5mm, so just push it back in and see if it helps. Mines an import.

I don't know how your speed sensor manages to pop out.

I'm sure it's held in with a screw or 2.

They do wear out and I think they are about £60 or something silly from Nissan.

well you see the black round thing inside the metal round thing?:D that for me kept working its way out, when I pushed it back in it was fine until it came back out again.

well, I been having a look - what a sh1tty day for working under a car! Should the black inner bit be completely flush with the metal collar? Mine is proud by maybe a couple of mm. Doesn't want to move though.

cheers
