Just looked at the left front brake pads, outside ones are worn a hell of a lot more than the inside ones, does this suggest seized pistons on the inside?

When I replace the pads, should I be also be doing a caliper rebuild? if so, wheres the best place for caliper kits and standard brake pads?

Thanks

John

Hi Dixonjohn, I've just changed my front pads. Got mine from Jeff at ********(Black ebc Kevlar). I know he does caliper kits. The black pads wear the same as normal pads but suppose to be more responsive.

Hi John,

Ive replaced many brakes on various cars, and i have found quite often one side slightly more worn on one side. You'll be able to tell if the inside is seized as when replacing them, you wont be able to push the piston back in. I once had a seized piston on a rear disc of a vauxhall cavalier gsi. It wouldnt move an inch and the rear disc became rusty on that side of the disc as the pad wasn,t moving.

Cheers

Jon.

yea, the inner pistons on both my front calipers were siezed solid. rebuilt them with seal kits from courtesy - i was amazed by the difference in braking after i done it!! :)

Paul,

I get the feeling that mine must be........almost a 1/4" more meat left on the inside pads

I was just checking Courtesy's site for price comparisons, they only list 2 caliper repair kits, one up till 1992 and the other 1993 onwards. I thought turbos had different front brakes, are the calipers same for turbos as n/a ?

Your right Paul, after checking Courtesy site again after 1991 all brakes are the same.

Dont get EBC Black stuff's they wont last 5 minutes before you need to change them.

Ok, how much are nissan ones? or what other make should I go for?

Do I really need the caliper kit if a couple of pistons are seized? I could just dismantle, clean and re-assemble couldnt I ?

Cheers

John

Steve,

When you say "standard ones" do you mean Nissan ones ? Surely standard pads for the street should last a bit.

John

john

your right they wernt from nissan

i think thet were minex or something like that

i put nissan ones in my old 300 they were just as shiyt

they might last a bit longer in a non turbo

steve

jez

Why would brake pads last longer in a non turbo

Depends how you drive.

John

no mate they are not mine, but you can see my chipped rough assed black painted ones. :D I might but my big discs back on too if I can be bothered.

Mintax do lots of grade, std, probably something between then... 1144, 1155, 1166, 1177.

John

same brakes less power to try and stop

yes your right its all todo with how you drive

as mine is a auto brakes get used hard

but ive had lots of nissans and standard brakes are always crap

steve

yep nissan brakes are poo, i've got zed brakes all round (brembo discs, castrol SRF fluid, and Mintex 1155's on the front std on rear) on my S13 and they are still shite, must be really bloody awful on a Zed.

I put stock (genuine) pads back in my rebuilt calipers, personally i dont find them too bad. but then 4 out of 8 pistons were siezed before then so what do i know??? :D

Has anyone else found that the black EBC kevlar pads wear out in no time?

In the last year I have used

EBC Red Stuff

EBC Carbon Kevlar

Mintex

Nissan OEM

Metal Matrix

Porterfield

To be honest they are all crap apart from Metal Matrix which are not to bad and the currant ones I am using which are porterfields which do seem to out brake all the others by far, espeacialy when warmed up

Thanks Ryan,

I dont push my zed too hard, so I probably dont need the pads with the ultimate stopping power when heated up, just a good all round pad for street use that will last reasonably well.
