I have booked eValet to come and touch in two small but fairly deep stone chips. I know some people have had them do some work but the guy described two ways they could fill the chip- cheap and expensive (basically).

Cheap- fill it at the spot, and it would be visible-ish (70% improvment he said), or expensive which will be invisible, but involves them spraying a bigger area and laquering it. Should I trust the 'invisible' method- I mean will they get a colour match? The web site said something about a gizmo that matches the actual paint colour on the car in some electronic way so that it really is an exact match.

Should I trust it? If not, what should I do with the chip. The work is guaranteed for 1 year, ChipsAway for two years, AND the woman who works at the chipsAway centre is well fit (:D). Which should I go for?

What I meant was- should I trust some geezer doing a bit of spraying on my front drive. Will it all wash off and be a really bad obvious patch, or will it really be 'invisible'?

Here is an exciting picture of the offending chip. Is it small enough to get touched in OK?

I know it's small but it's down to the metal and I don't want to just leave it. Surely the smaller it is the easier to paint.

I haven't used these people myself mate .. but my girlfiend has .. and believe me she is soooo fussy she was happy with the work that was carried out.

Courtesy do some good kits for stone chips that you can do yourself ... Stuart is getting an order together at the MO ...

Maybe that would be useful as well

imo they are only as good as the training and expereince theve had,got them out to do a scratch on the door of my grey tt,guy said it was near impossible to match as there was 5 shades to choose from despite the color code off the id plate, when the sun was on it after he,d done it it looked really naff, bill was £80

Touch it up with the correct touch-up paint, leave to dry,do it again untill its prowed.Get some 2000 grit paper ,bit of water and a bar of soap.rub it down using the the soap & water.Buff up with "T-CUT". All gone. And no cost :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

Don't hold yyour breath if you get Chips Away to do it. When I booked them to do some chips on my bonnet and wings the f!"£$r didn't turn up.

do what vinz says. It's not tricky. Take your time, build up the coats. The little pens from halfords are best as they have a little metal bit at the end... one little blob.. leave to dry, another, etc. Then fine wet and dry (use wet), and a couple of coats of autoglym.

save yourself 80 quid. And get a better job.

For little bits that size an approximate colour match is all you need too. Mine is pearl yellow, and you can't get the colour from nissan. I just got a touch up pen from halfords as close as I could and it's fine unless your eye is 1 inch from paint.

Also, remeber yer boot is plastic and bonnet is aluminium, so if there are any there, it's not like it's going to rust.

The boot is plastic?????

The bonnet's aluminium- and the bumper etc is plastic. Guess where my two worst chips are- wing and a-pillar. I think they are down to metal, which is why I wanted them done. The two chipsaway methods were to touch in the little bit- visible, or spray a larger area and blend in with their special 'matching' paint. Still not sure what to do as I think I am pretty cack-handed and could make it worse in such an obvious place right by the driver's door. But I have to sort out the jacking points where paint has been pulled off anyway, so I might practice there first. Just don't want to duff up my paint, seeing as I just spent £500 on the back quarter, which they did match perfectly. (XL in coventry - they were really good).

Thanks yet again for the advice. Did it myself, and although it's not perfect, the two chips I tried are almost invisible. I built up the paint, but I don't think I let it get quite high enough so might have to have a go again- when I wet n dry-ed it it seems to be a little below the level of the rest of the paintwork, even though I did try to built it up proud.

I got a bit worried when I rubbed it down and the area around it went dull with the sanding. I thought oh shit I've messed it up, but after a quick polish it was back to being shiny.

The paint is a very good match- and it was from Halfords. Better than paying ChipsAway £111. The chips really are nearly invisible.

I certainly wouldn't trust Chips Away !!!

I wouldn't trust my own 'skill' with this sort of thing, but it turned out OK. I'm pretty happy with the results. Hey, by tomorrow there will probably be more stone chips to take their place anyway!
