Over since the moron hit the drivers side of my car my clutch has seemed heavier than it used to be. Is there anything under the wing that is part of the clutch booster system, such as some vacuum piping.

At idle there always appears to be a bit of a whistle coming from the driver side rear of the engine bay. This takes a fraction of a second to stop after the engine is switched of. I've changed all the 4mm vacuum piping around here in an attempt to stabilize the idle, but no luck so far.

Yep, there are two tanks, one of which is under the wing. There is a pic in the online manual and also if you remove part of the wheel arch liner you can see it.

Will the clutch still be useable if I block of the booster vacuum system to see if this is the cause of my problems?

Yeah, but it does behave a little wierd - you feel the clutch pedal push back when you rev the engine.

Thanks Andy, I'll give it a go later. I see an insurance battle coming on!!!!!

I'm currently using my clutch without vacuum assist, since developing a vacuum leak, which I've yet to trace.

What I've done is remove the pipe from the most O/S end of the balance bar, and plugged the hole. I'm rather hoping that it isn't the clutch booster thats gone faulty, i.e. the diaphragm split, since they're v.expensive! Even courtesyparts dont have it cheap!

regards

Simon.

It's only 'buffer' or resovoir tank, reckon you could lash something up with a strong tin can or something if necessary.

No cure for the clutch booster though, although I don't believe they have been know to fail much. I suspect I have a tiny leak on my brake servo - that will be fun to fix one day !!!

Disconnected and blocked off the clutch booster line at the balance bar and she now idles perfectly smoothly at 750 rpm after I managed to get to the idle adjustement screw. The Halfords mini ratchet set with one of the flat screw driver bits turned out to be the ideal tool for getting at that with the battery in.

Just have to get to the tank now to see if it's split. Can this be done with the wing on?
