Steering U/J

Hi Guys,

Can you buy the universal joint that joins the steering column to the rack,

Theres play in the steering and when i had a look this morning this joint is totally shagged and looks like it's non rebuildable.

Available from Nissan, but in the region of £99 + Vat (ouch) have changed quite a few recently all as a result of MOT failure.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the info, it's got to be done so i'll have to bite the bullet and get one, i wasn't expecting that much though.

Are they easy enough to do or a bit of a pig?

Thanks

Baz

Baz, not too bad, you have to undo the steering column ( 2 x 12 mm nuts) inside the car under the steering wheel lower cover and three 12 mm nuts at the footwell/ bulkhead whre the lower assembly passes through, then from underneath the car release the 2 x pinch bolts mark the relative postions with tipex to ensure all goes back ok ( flats on the shaft and coupling anyway) now pull the steering wheel up a few inches and the coupling will have split apart, replace and put all back in reverse order

( per Haynes manual style)

Actually is easier than it sounds and make`s more sense when you actually doing it.

Hope that helps

Actually you don't have to do that. Take the upper u/j bolt off and then the lower. Loosen the steering rack bracket on the drivers side alittle. And you should be able to slide the u/j up the shaft enough for the bottm to slide off the rack assebmly. Then pull it off the steering shaft. Put it back on in reverse order. Might mark the shaft to double insure that the steering wheel remains in the same postion as before.

For future reference, the part number is 4808030P01 and cost £116.45 from Nissan.
