switched the car on this morning to park it on the curb so the alarm fitters could work on it and there was a quite loud ticking from the engine bay.

these things always seem to magically happen overnight cos i took it out yesterday night n it was running fine! the ticking speeds up as the revs increase but when i lift the bonnet i cant make out where its coming from cos th engine is louder than the ticking. took it to the bank and it kinda quietens down after a bit of a drive but il have to check again later to make sure.

any ideas?

lol i bloody well hope not!

Checked the oil level?

Do you park on a slope, i do sometimes & it ticks until

i get it on a flat road. ;)

Hi, ive been noticing this tick. I thought it must be a slope thing. What worries me is that the top end of the engine,i.e cams ,tappets etc... are being starved of oil and wear will be faster. :( trying to find a good posistion......story of my life ;)

Whilst on the Bomb theme, I hope you don't have a detonation problem!!!

As for the keys, I love mine, I just can't decide which one I like best, so I swap them about just for the hell of it!! :D

Must probably hydroulic lifters........ mine used to do this when it felt like it but am in the middle of replacing all 24 of them [big job] lots of bitz to remove from the top of engine to get to them But hopefully when it is finished no more tick tick ticking from the engine

will post when done to give results.......................Hopefully quite

cheers

Dave

Ive got the same tappet troubles started overnight and never gone

Can you add an oil additive like 'slick 50' or does it harm the turbo seals? Ive used it on other engines and it seemed to help out!?

I gather this is a common problem!?

I gather this is a common problem!?

def the hydraulic tappets iv had two beamers and there prone to tappet probs especially with high mile engines thicker oil will quiet them down but wont solve the problem i always thought hydraulic tappets self ajust but obviously still wear eventually and dont pick up as much oil

Me dad seems to think its the oil pressure causing it, it only sounds like 1 though and it gets louder the hotter the car!

I had all the tappets stripped and rebuilt before they was put back in the engine about a month later the tapping noise appeared

how long has it taken you to strip the head to get to the valves yewcheck?

6 Hours just to get to the camss then to replace lifters!!

all we have to do now is put back together again

worst parrt was removing the plugs etc on the electrical side to get to remove plenium.....also have to remove radiator and cam belt covers and also both hard [water] pipes to the engine to get cam belt covers off unbelievable amount of work just to replace lifters which only took ½ an hour to replace!

but worth it to get rid of that annoying noise :D

cheers

Was told by a mechanic that you should use thinner

oil to help cure noisy tappets?

Yaz,

Use Xtralube Z. S-H-I-T hot mate and tapping noise(s) will be a distant memory.

DO NOT use slick 50 though...It's utter garbage and overpriced. :nono:

Halfords sell this stuff. Put into the oil, give the car a good run and from then on the car will run quieter, more smoothly and the oil will be well looked after by this additive, no matter how fast you drive!!!!!!!!!!!

I've also used Nitrox HOT-SHOT in my petrol and this too works pretty well (even better cause I use OPTIMAX alongside it). :D

Cheers
