Hi there, just been looking around Ebay and various sites and keep noticing grounding kits . Are these any good and if anyone has one fitted, have they felt any benifits. Just wondering if its a gimmick

Cheers Jaffa, I always forget about that option. Done a search and found answers to my queries. :hyper:

Basically, you will only see a difference if theres an grounding issue with your car. You may not even know you have aproblem until you try the kit though!

Well worth a go though IMHO!!!

May be a worthwhile investment "Just In Case". I went though three heater matrixes in just over six months when I had a grounding issue.

Hi Posidrive,

I fitted a grounding kit, they look nice anyway.

I'm currious, how does a grounding issue cause heater matrix failure ?

John

Every signal sent from the ECU made of electricity from the battery. Electricity flows from negative (Earth) to posative (Live) and if your Earthing connection is poor, the strength of the electricity flow is not as good as it should be and this also means the strength of the signals too and from the ECU are also weak and could hinder performance.

You could install the kit and nothing happen because the earth on your car is good, but you could install it and find it improves power, responce, MPG, smoothness etc.

For the cost of the kit its worth it. If it works you have made your car run better, if there is no difference you know your earth was good and now you have a few more to help it from erroding.

i fitted a kit on mine

changes gear better

more responsive

lights are better

stereo is louder

windows go up and down faster

seats move faster

fuel is cheaper

beer tasts better

car stays cleaner

wippers have a new speed

and the ejector seat now works

ha ha Steve, next you'll be telling us that women started coming on to you too!

The man to speak to is Pete Shrimp on here. Superb quality equipment. Drop him a PM, I'm sure he'll treat you right. :D :D (No I'm not on commission :( :( )

Simon :)

LOL Awww cheers Simon   I will soon have the results of a Supra TT owner who is dyno testing his car with and without my Supra grounding kit

I might as well use this thread to say I've now got silver and orange available ;)

Cheers

Earthing problems can lead to stray currents. If you are unfortunate and the next best earth route is via the matrix then you will get an electrolytic reaction between the aluminium core and the coolant. There may be a write up on the board somewhere, an article that I extracted from a trade radiator magazine.

I'me pretty certain that this was my problem because 80k miles after the earthing issues were addressed I've not blown another matrix.

I fitted the grounding kit on mine at the weekend and it does seem to have improved my rather rough and unpredictable tickover. So I guess I must have a poor earth somewhere.

is this the article?

Sure is

Vijay,

That article (see last page) specifically tells you not to ground the heat exchanger (radiator core or heater matrix) because it will accelerate the corrossion of your radiator.

Actually, I take that back, it's made feck all difference, probably more to do with the ECU reset than anything else !

Cheers for that Andy.

I've had a lot of great positive feedback (on ebay mostly) for these, and a few where the kit hasnt made any difference, like Andy so eloquently puts it ;)

Cheers

Right then, I 've got my grounding kit on its way(should be here tomorrow).Ordered it on Sat,soz Pete never relised you did them.... My next question is about ECU resetting. Ive looked at other threads and some say it takes 60mins to do and others say 20mins. How long does it take to put the grounding kit on? and does the ECU automaticaly reset by itself or do you have to do somthing? The engines running fine at the moment so im a bit worried about ending up with a rough running Z when the ECU is relearning.

Cheers Jonce

Takes 30-60mins to fit, the ECU will usually have reset by then due to negative terminal being disconnected. The car wont run rough due to an ECU reset, its just "ready to learn" any new settings, and has cleared any stored error codes.

They are not grounding the rad/heater matrix, they are using other ground points in the vehicle!

Thanx Pete. When you say "ready to learn" what do you mean? Surely it will reset itself to how it was before or does it depend on how its driven etc... The only thing ive done to it since ive had it is get it derestricted. Should i have reset the ECU then??? Ive only had the car 8 Mths

The car learns new settings all the time, but takes a while to do it. Unhooking the battery for an hour or so simply does it quicker. Taking it out for a good blast afterwards will teach it all it needs to know lol :D

By "ready to learn" I mean wiping its memory of any errors, creating a clear canvass. Sort of.

So no - theres no need to do it. Mind you - Skyline owners do theres as a kind of regular service item. Any thoughts on this?

Yes, I realise that, and grounding other engine and chassis parts can be beneficial. But I was just cautioning people not to get carried away with grounding everything in sight. I thought I saw a photo on this forum of someone's engine bay with what looked like a ground to the radiator.

They need to get out more :D

Grounding points on the PS ;) kit are bulkhead, 2x engine block, wing and intercooler piping IIRC :)

LOL @ Mark :D:D
