a friend of mine is 30, fully comp on an astra coupe turbo.

He has been with Direct line for 2 weeks, then the other day he got an NIP through for 34 in a 30, he paid it etc, then told direct line...

They told him he had to pay an extra £78 on top of 524.

My understanding was that your first 3 points shouldnt affect your premium, and even if it is up to the inurers, an extra £78 ? thats very steep!

Like a muppet hes paid up etc, and having a winge, but its a bit worrying that they think they can do this?

I thought you only had to tell the insurance company when you were renewing? And £78 is a fecking lot

Its up to the insurance company whether they charge extra for any points.

I would have challenged the speeding ticket. THe recomended amount to catch speeding is 10% + 2mph. So the government recomends 35 in a 30 zone not 34, that had a very good chance of getting quashed in a court.

Stuart - there no country wide policy on that, it all depends on the individual local forces. People/the press have just picked up on that policy which a few counties adopted.

I would have challenged it too tho.

Didn't they abandon the 10% + 2mph rule because it was deemed to be un-ethical because if the speed limit is 30, it's 30. Most cameras/coppers wont do people for 34 though, that's very harsh!

I know, the can do you for 31 in a 30 zone, but speedos are not that accurate and even the slightest thing like how much tread you have on your tyres will make a difference.

Learned by experience myself with about £100 increase per 3 points on SP50's on wide open empty roads and the sods applied it for 5 years even tho its off your license in 3. Brings it home just how much it really costs and friends think I'm paranoid with a radar detector.

Like everyone has said, it is down to the insurance co if they charge extra for the first SP conviction.

However if the offence after he took out the policy they shouldn't charge him this year. It is common practice to inform them of convictions and NIPs at the time of renewal so they may increase the new year's premium. Therefore if you tell the insurers during a year it quite rightly should not increase the current premuim in force.

Your mate should check the date of the offence and take the matter up with Direct Line if it occurred after he renewed the policy and contact the Insurance Ombudsman or ABI if they do not reconsider.

Richard ;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

What a scandal! ! They've probably changed the rules for offences to take immediate effect on the ins' policy, they'll make a shed load.

Do they take it from the date of the offence or the date the points were added to your license, which could be months later or never if you win in court. Anyone know?

I know some one who was it from behind in his car about 5 days before his insurance was due. Upon renewal they actually put that he had a claim and that it was his fault, and they would amend it when the repairs where sorted and the other insuance paid for it.

Made his policy go up £300

sorry to jump in but direct line are totally crap due to my experiance with them, changed my insurer due to my age paid the full year of insurance with them, and they wouidnt send my 1yrs no claims full stop, costin me a further 500squid on my insurance.all insurers have dodgy slipholes beware!!

same thing happend to me with them. they even backdated payment to the offence date, as they said i wouldnt have been covered if i would of had an accident. mine was also around 70 notes.

I have heard that our esteemed government want the insurers to charge extra as soon as poss to further punish the speeder.

Ah, the same government who convict people for driving at 10% over the speed limit, yet have done nothing to address the hundreds of thousands of uninsured drivers? The same government who have spent millions with the DVLA on VED enforcement yet don't give a toss whether or not you're insured?

:xxx:

Anyway, that won't work. Performance car drivers aren't generally put off by a hike in insurance - it's not a big fraction of the running cost of even a cheap car like ours.

I'm with you on that one!! It's all bellicks!! But as usual the motorist is an easy target and a massive stealth tax mountain, lining the pockets of the government, plods and asylum cheaters!!

We'll all be driving smart cars in 10 years! :x:

Bruiser

I think we could really do with a specialist insurer in our traders section! (one that doesn't charge ridiculous hikes in premium for ALL Manchester postcodes too, Houghtons!).
