turbo life

I have been toying with the idea of switching to a turbo, but this forum is littered with horror stories of turbo destruction. My question is, how many of you are driving on the original turbos? and how many miles has the car done

Dunno if they are original but 120,000 miles - same turbos as when I bought it 5 and a half years ago and it had 40,000 on the clock then.

John,

As long as its been looked after, and the oil is changed regularly with good quality synthetic stuff, then you shouldnt have any problems.

The problems seem to start when there is a lack of maintainence to the car. Or whacking up the boost on standard equipment without taking the precautions of upgrading the parts.

I could take you out for a spin in mine, you might think its worth it. ;)

Brian.

SPOT ON;)

My old tubs have done 40k and there is ZERO play on the bearings, good quality oil and regular changes combined with looking after them is the answer;)

Thanks Brian,

Have you had any turbo problems/failures ?

You have also driven non turbos (mine) does the turbo have loads more acceleration (with 70 horses extra I guess it must) ?

How much quicker is it over standing 1/4 mile, 0-60, 0-100 etc. ?

Cheers,

John

136K on UK TT. My other petrol car has a single Garret turbo has well and I'm 100% sure that is original and with 111K and no signs of problems. I know some wag will say yet!!

However stock boost levels 9 - 10psi. I'm sure 14psi used regularly would finish em off tho.

Not to mention decatting and increased boost on a standard turbo is going to reduce the lifespan of the turbo seals big time. (Like mine - seals gone at 55k).

John,

I have had no problems what so ever with the tubs.

I have mine running at about 14 psi, about 5psi more than standard, this is coupled with a remapped ECU to cope with the need for extra fueling. This is giving me about (according to the SE Nissan RR day ;) ) 115 more horses than a standard NA.

All that's just numbers though which means squat. ;) The difference in acceleration to the NA is noticable. :D

However, you have to remember that these cars are over a decade old and really need the TLC to keep them in tip top condition.

Mine now only comes out to play at the weekend, and if im on holiday. Like this week. :D

100k+ miles now, oil changes every 3k miles from new.

daily driver running 16psi for the last 2 years :)
