Man, since I decided to keep my car, I am getting some use out of this membership!

Right....I have an 89' TT with the small poly spoiler and below that a strip of black vinyl to match the lights. As it's been outside this winter, and it's been cold and wet up here, the sticker has blown and may as well come off.

I have noticed a couple of you guys on here have a similar effect with just body colour below the brake light as opposed to the sticker.

What I want to know is what can you use to get the vinyl base off? I did a test patch and used Tetroclean engine cleaner, meths, white spirit and none of them got the sh*t off.

I have plenty of elbow grease but flogging dead horses aint my thing.

Cheers for any pointers

When you say "blown" do you mean bubbled up?? you'll probably need a new spoiler, as its the spongy material underneath thats soaking in water if it's the original spoiler!! and not the sticker itself.

Hello again Paul,

It's definitely not the spoiler, I was aware of the problems with water soaking into them and I am happy it's not that. I think what happened was I took it to a power wash place and the power hoses just lifted the edges of the stickers and let water in under the first layer of vinyl. It progressively got worse over the last few weeks despite my attempts to rescue it.

So.....what gets the stuff off?

Glad to hear its not your spoiler, both of ours were knackered!!

If White Spirit won't touch it, I don't know, you could try Cellulose thinners, this will shift most stuff, and as long as its the original paint *shouldn't* damage it, but be very cautious with this, trying only a very small patch first as it can sometimes attack old non-cellulose paint.

I'm assuming youv'e pulled off the surface of the sticker and its the sticky residue you're talking about??

Paul

The old thinners thing scares me......

Yes the front of the sticker, the shiny bit, came off really easy but it left a rubbery/foamy backing which is murder to try and get off.

Try bodyline sealer and adhesive cleaner, its designed specifically for this purpose, available from Brown Brothers and Partco, I think if you use cellulose thinners you would need to be extremely careful.

Try heat. Maybe use a hairdrier, then peel the vinyl off.

Combine that with dabbing using some sort of volatile cleaner like meths etc on a decent cloth (this will remove the heated and softened glue residue).

Loads of stickers and stuck on things are put on using heat based glues so this can work well.

Equally, don't let anything get too hot or it might damage it.

OK, here's my tip for removal of stickers.....

Get a hold of Tetro Clean engine cleaner, it's made by CarPlan and you can get it at a decent motor factors. It costs about £10 for a 5 litre tin but man does that shift sticky sh*t. It does not affect paint at all so you can go mad if you want.

And after you've finished, apply it to the engine bay, because it does exactly what it says on the tin......

Can you post a pic of what you are talking about please! I need to know if this "sticker" is the thing ive seen on other zeds - that i aint got, but looks really good

- Thanks for any help - Mike

Sorry mate, I dont have a photo available but basically it is the black shiny sticker below the brake light on the spoiler.

I think he means this bit: (normally black, with "Nissan 300ZX/Fairlady Z" written on it).

Yes indeed Hi5 that is what I mean, mine now looks like above but in red.

That's a nice looking zed!! Very clean too!

Um.. is it yours?

hi guys use a dremmel and a rubber grind wheel works perfectly everytime wipe away excess dust and dirt with a safe solvent these rubber wheels are used in garages that sell tyres and are used for loads of purposes ideal for this type of job try it!

Excuse my ignorance, but do some zeds have a glass panel there (on the boot lid)?

Or is that just a long sticker ? Because if its a sticker - then where do you get em from ?

Thanks for any help - Mike

ps. That white zed is mint

Post 94 Zeds with the revised spoiler have a perspex panel but the lower level spoiler on early models has a sticker.

Luke from ZCentre has confirmed that if you need a sticker you can get them from Nissan, part # 93094 42P10 and they're approx. £7.00.

Thanks very much Luke.
