This is my second 300ZXTT, my first being a UK car with manual gearbox, my current car is a Jap import with automatic gearbox. Odly, I've had the same problem with both cars. The aircon seems to blow out warm air (really quite warm!) when set to minimum temperature (10 degrees C). After a while, I do get cooler air but only at about ambient temperature. Any ideas what's wrong?

First thing to check is the Freon levels.

Open the bonnet, and look down just in front of the battery, you should see a pipe that goes into the side of a sort of vertical pipe, in the top of the vertical part will be a small window (might be covered in crap, in which case, wipe clean and you'll see a small area of glass)..

Start the aircon and look at the glass, if you see what looks like water with no or very little bubbles, the freon is OK. If you see lots of bubbles, or what looks like white foam/white liquid, it's very low and needs recharging.

If that's OK then it could be the air mix doors, or the coolant bypass valve on the heater matrix.. I have this problem at the moment, and I believe it's the bypass valve, so I'll let you know when I figure out how to check that!

You got to expect that an 8 - 10 year old car is likely to be low on gas. Check also that the compressor is kicking in and revs rising slightly when auto is selected. Search on aircon for tips! I had to recharge with the new stuff.

Just out of interest how much does it cost for a recharge?

I paid £75 for a recharge with R436a (one of the replacement gasses for R12) - RS24 is another drop in replacement gas (supposedly a little better than R436a, but I have no proof of that)..

Don't let them put the new gas in, whatever you do.. (R134a? Damn my memory is playing up). Make sure it's a drop in replacement for R12..
