But not for speeding......

I picked up my Zed on the back of a trailer at the weekend, Driving down the M6, and the trailer had the detachable steel ramps, one of the securing bolts must have loosened due to vibration and a ramp fell off (flat & about 2-3ft long with rolled edges)

Being conscientious & concerned for others peoples safety, I immediatley pull off at the next off ramp and give the police a call. They tell me to wait and a car will try and recover it. I wait for an hour or so with 3 severly bored & tired kids at 10pm.

Police turn up and inform me that it's not their job to recover the ramp, it'll be done by the motoway ppl & I will have to call them. I am then asked to jump in the back off their car, where they proceed to charge me for driving with an insecure load & give me a fixed penalty of 3 points & £60

:slap: serves me right for doing the right thing in this country.

Motorways still never found the ramp

tossers!

That is absolutly appauling, and doesnt suprise me one bit, I saw a big lump of turf on the A444 last night and half a mile down the road a police car had pulled over a fiat uno for nothing no doubt, the cops must of had to drive round the lumps of turf to to get to the bit of road they were on, but had they done owt about it.....no just leaving everyone to swerve round it.

The law is an ass.

Thats Fookin Shite mate

I'd seek advice.

Thats just not right, you took all the right steps and they still fine you.

I'm a biker and regularly use the motorways as i do in the Z, and yes i understand that if i hit the ramp i'd be gutted but at least youve done your very best to inform the authorities.

Sorry for you mate.

Rich

It'd be more hassle than it's worth and they'd still apply the letter of the law, and I'd have lawyers & court costs on top of it.... and That's exactly what they 'bank' on

I'll just bite the bullet :mac1:

You shouldnt lose a 1/4 of your license for that, these things can happen no matter how well you've checked the trailor. Might it be that it never actually happened?

I would write to the police stating that when you got home you found the ramp in the boot of the car where your friend had put it after loading car on trailor. You mistakenly thought it fell off when you travelled over existing debris on the m-way. In the light of these circumstances I would ask that consideration be given to cancelling the fixed penalty ticket.

Good luck

Or say you left it at the location where you put the car on the trailor. They cant prove you wrong.

if they never found the ramp - just deny it ever happened!!! how can they do you with no evidence?!?!

You really should put a letter of complaint in about this. I spoke with my mate who's a copper and whoever has given you that fine was well out of order!!

Must ask him who to send a complaint to (Police Compliants Authority??)

Not all coppers are bar stewards, just MOST of them!! :xxx:

Cheers

Go to citizens advice - they're usually pretty good. After that, go to local paper - the bad press would probably be enough of a threat to get it dropped. It'd make a great story - on the phone you're told to wait while they recover it, then turn up and tell you they lied on the phone, and they just came to book you!! And journalists can make things sound even worse in articles...
