AKA scamera vans.

Wondered what opinions you have of them?

They dont get targeted by anti camera groups like the fixed gatso's do.

I think we're gonna be seeing more and more of them , especially on dual carriageways where they rake in a mint from a high turnover of traffic.

IMO the vans are the lowest of the low, you never know where they're going to be 'keeping an eye on your safety' what a joke, only it aint funny.

What is their so called purpose? To promote road safety and prevent accidents? So what do they do - they prosecute on a mass scale average drivers traveling slightly over the speed limit but in the majority 100% safely, and worse they totaly ignore drivers doing the speed limit or less who may be driving dangerously ie. tailgating. They churn out fines on a robotical production line basis and alienate joe public form the police.

A scamera partnerships purpose can only therefore be to raise revenue under the pretence of road safety, as it clearly doesnt attempt to prevent dangerous driving, or have any impact on it.

Anyone here been had by one yet?

Does anyone here support them and why?

cheers :-)

Well i was driving down the M6 today and came off just before thelwall, i was driving down the slip road when there was a traffic jam....strange as its usually not busy anyway after about 10 mins of stop start driving found out that on top of the motorway bridge theres a mobile speed camera van taking a full lane thus causing the traffic jam but get this...

Its only monitoring traffic thats already doing 40 in road works WITH speed cameras every hundred yards or so on the side of the motorway so why was they there???

Another valuable use of police time and money

bar stewards ! Think they can park up and start scamming where ever they like!

One parked across a private driveway to a house the other day and was politely told to fook the hell off!

Perhaps the one you saw was focusing up the road more where the roadworks ended?

This way he could get loads of drivers accelerating out the roadworks, when they get back upto 80ish they're had and prosicuted regardless of how safe or dangerous they're driving.

I agree with any speed limit enforcement on "restricted" roads, eg 30/40/50 mph and m'way roadworks. The lower speed limits are there for a good reason (usually  ) so I've no complaint.

However the majority of roads with national speed limit (m'ways, dual carriageways and major roads) are deemed to be safe enough for higher speeds. In these instances cameras of all types are purely to raise revenue. There are some good stretches of single carriageway A roads throughout the country that are wide, straight and of good surface where the 60mph limit can safely be exceeded in dry quiet conditions. These van-camera b45tards sit all day allowing some people to pootle along them at 35mph causing almighty tailbacks (or forcing other drivers to attempt the risky overtaking of 5 cars.....) and do nothing. But if one of us should fly past at 80 later, when there's nothing about we'd get done. Yet who is more likely to cause an accident FFS

Sorry, ranting again, but you get the message :D

Richard ;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

These bloody vans are a pain in the arse. I was on the M6 and had just come out of roadworks that were 50 and so everybody sped up naturally, cruising along at about 80 in the pretty much empty fast lane and i notice an unmarked green van parked up on the bridge ahead, then it clicks that the doors open and bugger im nicked at 84, the thing that really pisses me off is the fact that the van was green with a yellow stripe with SECURITY written on the side and the little old farts in micras in the slow lane doin 30 holding everybody up dont even get looked at. When i say I i mean my dad, i was just in the car.lol

Rant over.

Do the laws of the distance that they must be fully visable from count the same as static cameras?

Cos most of the time they are hidden away from view untill you see the flash.

Im pretty sure the guidelines say they should display a warning sign on the roadside xxxmetres infront of the van and clearly visible. Also only target areas that have had accidents within a 3 mile radius , WTF! But in reality they can set up any where they want and flout all the guidelines.

Its good to see Topgear giving some publicity to the ABD and other campaigners for common sense.

Just another revenue making machine for the police and local councils. They say it's to improve road safety (HOW!!??).

Another one in a long list of items that screw up our driving pleasure.

They are all *****x!!!! :mac1:

I was catching a line of about 4-5 cars when all of a sudden they all start to brake, why? A speed trap van.

As I was leading up to overtake I was going too fast so had to move along side the last in line and "hid" there while we went past the speed trap.

The old git in the van looked at me as if I had just murdered his kids.

Road was long, wide, sunny and dry with about a mile of visibility, (last summer) And yes I know I should have seen it first.

Also in Aylesbury, they have a tall van which scans over the top of roundabouts etc. All you see , if anything is the dark top of the van which to be honest is just about impossible to see.

You dont know you have been nicked until you go over the roundabout and get pulled, so take care.

Theres one in Abingdon, always @ 7am, just as you leave

a 30mph limit into a 60 limit, whats the point of that?

Theres no schools nearby. Surely it should be pointing

the opposite direction as the traffic enters a built-up area?

The coppers round my way are complete :xxx: . They should

be out catching real villains, not persicuting motorists!!

I'd phone the Police & tell them that there's someone causing an obstruction on the road with a van.

My brother did exactly that, knowing full well that it was a Police van that was causing the obstruction & they were forced to move it + they never parked there again ;)

Where is it? I sometimes go through Abingdon on my way to/from work and although I generally stick to the limits, at that sort of time in the morning I'm not exactly the most awake bunny on the road.

afaik, mobile units only have civilians operating them, so you can go harrass them if you want, especially if parked illegally or well hidden. You could even stand there and alert drivers yourself :P

(or park up round the corner, walk round, let his tyres down, peg it round the block and run away lol) :P
