The original side on view of a car in the bodyshop had it much further back.

well at least an inch further anyway!

It's much smaller than the high level spoilers, but it's more rounded and a bit flipped up towards the back so it looks higher than it actually is!

No mate - that is where it sits. The curve of the spoiler footprints are matched up to the curve on the tailgate, so it can only fit there. You could put it further back, but you would need to fill the gaps and I don't know if it would sit at all well at the front.
