One of my mates is about to get an Alfa Romeo GTV (3litre V6).

Anyway, we were debating the insurance on it. I thought that the Z must be group 19/20 and that the Alfa would be around 17. He gets a magazine out and it says the opposite!!! The Z was 17 and the Alfa was 19/20!! I told him that that was crap but I thought that I'd check by applying for an online quote at the AA.

The Z: £2600

The Alfa: £3800

WTF is going on there??

300bhp vs 220bhp. Both 3litre V6 but the Z has twin turbos. The Z is also rwd and the Alfa is fwd (I assume the insurance companies prefer the safe understeering fwd to rwd cars??). Surely the Z is more sexy, super-car like and nickable?

Anyone know what this is all about? Is it simply car value (the Alfa ain't cheap). Next thing I know, he'll be racing me and whooping my arse!! (I'll never live that one down).

Please reassure me (at least by telling me that I can anihilate him in a race).

Of course if the Z is an import the figures will likely be different.

alfa's are small, damn death traps

Andy, I know it'd be more for an import but surely the fact that it is a comparison between a coupe/"sporty" car against a true sports/supercar should mean that it would be way more for the Z no matter what?

Not sure what I'm more shocked at. The Alfa's insurance or that the world trade building has just collapsed.

Andy

You may need to get like-for-like insurance quotes though. Maybe the AA companies like UK Z's but don't like Alfas (like me!).

Yeah, I see what you mean. Might give it a go on a few other sites but it seems to be backing up that magazine that the Alfa is group 19/20 and the Z is only 17.

Andy

When I was phoning round for insurance quotes (last year I think), I was told that a UK 300ZX TT is grp 18 and an import is grp 20.

Way back about two years before buying the Z my choice of new car was either:

1. A 6-8 year old Z (looks, power, T-bar)

or

2. A 3 year old Vauxhall Vectra GSI (2.5L V6)

Insurance for the Z was £1,200, and £2,500 for the vectra! Go figure!

What are you complaining about? Is nice to know the TT is not the most expensive car to ensure on the planet.

Tim

last year he quotes I had on Honda-prelude 2.2 and on a hyundai se coupe were as high as a 300zxTT!!!...

it changes month after month smile.gif

You will keep with him up to ~140 then you'll leave him

To 60 he'll beat you by a couple of tenths and he'll beat you to 100 by a couple of tenths. Assuming you both get ideal start offs and both your cars are standard.

Imho, the Alfa is a better styled car, and only has front wheel drive, no mega power losses thru drive-train.

Imho the Alfa looks like something a fat arsed sales rep would drive, not even in the same league as a Z.

Paul

Alfa GTV6 quicker than the Z to both 60 and 100 by a few tenths? what planet are you living on? official figures put the Z almost two seconds faster than the alfa to 100mph, and a full second faster to 60, apart from that I raced a friends GTV6 in my lexus soarer 4.0 (not as quick as the Z) and the soarer destroyed it, BTW my GTV owning friend is a hairdresser nuff said.

It does seem very strange to me. Maybe because the Z is cheap now (to buy)? Or maybe the Alfa is very difficult/expensive to get parts for?

Either way, I know which car I'd rather have. I'm not complainging about having cheaper insurance, I'm just a bit stunned by it. I once got a quote on a Ferrari Testarossa which was £100 cheaper than my Z but that was with a limited mileage of 3000 miles.

Soon, we'll be able to recommend Z's as being an economical car for students!

Andy

Maybe the soft top, but the hardtop IS faster according official figures. or at least as fast

Alfa is nice and new...costs alot to replace!

Z is old(er) and they can most likely write off and pay out or repair reasonably cheap!

It's all a compromise in the insurance industry, performance to age to current value etc. etc.

Don't bake yer noodle tryin' to work out the impossible! Just get a cheap quote and be happy!!! LOL!
