Where's this noise coming from ?......

My TT is making a 'exhaust blowing ?' noise when you put your foot down, although it only does this when accelerating mildly from cold. When the car is hot its not as bad but still present, and there is a 'ticking' noise . I cannot really hear where the 'exhaust blowing ?' sound is coming from when i rev the car when stationary however the 'ticking' noise seems to be coming from the pass side (uk right-hand drive) middle-of-engine turbo precat area. I have also read in another search that the sound that i am refering too could be the EGR pipe union on the exhaust manifold or could it be the o2 sensor leaking ? (o2 sensor my thought).

This sound is really annoying me now and is spoiling an otherwise fantastic purchase/investment (£2200 tt 1990).

I am really pleased with my bargain overall but i would just love to try and find the source of the noise.

Anyone had a similar sound from exhaust manifold/turbo/precat area ?

Which joint is the most likely suspect as i am dreading it being a cracked manifold or turbo !

Also my boost gauge is on halfway at tick-over (and with the ign off) , however it moves up some way when you boot it and i think the performance is good on the whole although i could be in safety boost.

Any ideas ? poss vacuum pipe off/missing ?

I used to work at a TVR dealers and whenever someone came in saying I have a ticking noise it was always leaking manifold gaskets. I recommend getting it up on a ramp/some ramps and looking underneath. The easiest way to tell where the blow is coming from is to hold some paper over what you think is the affected area and see if it moves or tip talc powder or dust down there to see if it bolws away. But it could just be the exhaust bolwing.

Thanks for that Dark warrior :) , i will try the talc idea as soon as i can.

Are'nt those manifold gaskets a swine to do though ? Ive heard its an engine out job ,like doing the turbos ?

Also , how would one get the talc around the manifold area ? Its pretty cramped around there with the turbo there and stuff.

Anybody else got any ideas of what else it could be ?

Much appreciated. :)
