I know people fit extra oil coolers to auto Zs.

I rencently bought a non-turbo auto Z from Japan.

Would that need an extra oil cooler or is it just turbo models that need it?

fitted one to my N/A as I have read so much about the autobox being the weakest link and saying "goodbye", I guess if your not doing many long runs it might be fine, but cost me £100 and really is a doddle to fit so I decided it was the best thing to do.

OK, nice one. I guess I'll get one. Just the fear alone is enough; waiting for that big 'crunch' won't be fun.

I'm not too clever with cars and maybe will take it to ******** and let them do it. Do you think it'd be expensive to have fitted. I thin the kit is £110+vat but that includes swopping the auto cooler with something else and fitting a new one or something.

Cost me £100 but I believe the Zcentre does one for about £110 plus vat which would be suitable, to be fitted I guess you would be looking about £250 parts and labour, depends who you go to, trying to find someone that knows the 300 and you can trust to work on it is the hardest part tho, my particular car didnt have a seperate engine or an autobox oil cooler (i think this is right for the N/A autobox cooling is done thru the radiator and this gets blocked stopping the flow of oil) so I fitted an autobox cooler as all you really need to do is undo the pipes going into the rad and plumb them into the oil cooler and will fit an engine oil cooler later as I figured the autobox one was more important, if you need anymore details let me know.

The Zcentre kit will only work on a UK one, that already has the engine cooler.

Guys,

I know this is an old thread but i'm part way through fitting the oil cooler kit from the zcentre, and i'm trying to figure out exactly how i go about fitting the auto oil pipes onto the old cooler.

I mean where do the auto pipes run from? do i need to disconnect them from the radiator? what happens to the auto oil currently residing in the radiator. Am i missing something?

Cheers,

Steve

you disconect the pipes going into the old old cooler, and attach them to the new one, the fluid in the old rad should NOT be put back in the new one, use new oil m8, best way is to put a bit of fluid in the new cooler, then once you done run the engine moving the lever through the gears, THEN check the level

just be very careful you dont drive it with low fluid, and just as important DON'T overfill

just re-read your post and im a bit confused

"how i go about fitting the auto oil pipes onto the old cooler."

or did you mean onto the new cooler?? if so follow above lol

OK i'm confused now.

This kit is to put the new cooler on for the engine oil, and (or so i thought!) to use the old small cooler as the auto cooler.

See here http://www.zcentre.co.uk/performance/perf2/oil_cool.htm

What i'm trying to find out is where i get the auto gearbox pipes from, what happens to the auto oil in the radiator, and now i think about it, what's the best way to clean the old cooler out.

Thanks for your time,

Steve

sorry m8

i assumed you wanted to swap the oil coolers, i found this which MAY explain it better than i did

http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=23705&highlight=replacing+oil+cooler

i thought the upgrade rad was just a straight swop for the old rad, so am i right that the little rad thats there at the moment is not the auto box cooler

but an oil cooler?

id be very suss about putting a rad that had been used for oil and start using it for auto fluid??????

ok further to the question above, can the bigger rad JUST be used for cooling the autobox? and if so does that mean you just take the pipes from the rad

and fit them to the cooler??

YEP!!

YEP!!

cheers m8;)

sorry Craig David, for hijacking your thread, hopefully someone can answer your question, although i would say i would have thought the gearbox on a tt and an n/a would heat the same, and the engine wouldn't matter

depends if you do long stints on the motorway, or use the z as a daily drive

Has anyone had an auto gearbox go on an N/A?

Mate, done this on mine, dead easy. The cooler from luke replaces the original engine cooler, then you use that cooler for the a/box-If your car aint fitted with an original engine cooler, simply use the one form luke for the a/box.

Either way deffo a good mod as the rad cooler is pants!

excellent pictures m8:)

the pipes from the Z radiator, does it matter when i fit them to the large rad,

which way? ie does the fluid flow any particular way in the new cooler?

ta

and i think i may get one of these rads for my xjs, as the system is very similar, ie the auto box is cooled in the rad, although not heard any horror stories of that box

No dude.just be sure to check em for leaks and that they don't chafe anywheres! ;)

cheers m8, i just reckon it makes more sense putting the big rad to cool the box, i wonder how many people who have done this mod using the oil cooler

havnt cleaned it out properly, and had problems later with contanimated fluid?

Dunno m8,have'nt heard of one!cleaned mine with brake cleaner and an air line

Made sure it was clear!

Competition Time!!

Guess which Tw@t didn't check for chafing today?

Said Tw@t ended up with an engine bay full of Auto oil, lots of smoke, and a very hot, horrendously slipping gearbox, about a mile from home?

One of the new pipes was cut through by a pulley wheel!!
