Hi,

Quick question/s, whilst my car is in warranty I intend to find as much wrong with it as possible, so you may be getting a few posts from me!!! Its a JSpec TT, 55k miles.

Question 1,

I have a whirring noise when driving at 10-50 mph which sounds like a fan noise. Does the viscous coupling fail on Zeds? Or could it be wheel bearings? The car does have 18'' alloys on it, which I should imagine cause allot more stress on them. These noise is fairly constant and starts to disappear over 60mph which is why I thought it might be the fan, due to the coupling starting to loosen up at higher speeds?

Question 2,

I need a new glovebox as I bought mine with a knackered catch. Does anything have one for sale? Are these prone to failure as well?

Question 3,

When does the cam belt need changing on these cars?

Question 4,

How do I go about getting a UK spec dash. The Jap one is a load of cack. I mean, 110 mph speedo?!?!!? WTF?!?! How much does it cost to replace/ is it tricky?

Sorry for all the questions, and yes, the car is totally superb. Very VERY pleased with it. :)

Regards,

Every 60,000 miles.

How does the speedo conversion work then? I don't see how changing the faces alters how the speedo works? Surely it won't be accurate? I mean currently my 60 mph is at the top of the dial?

No its the bottom bit of the page, the speedo conversion/de-limiter is not just a face change, the face plates are also available.

I'm not sure what is involved in the conversion, as I've still gota get the limiter off mine, although the clock now reads in mph (not sure what has been done to mine there). If you speak to Luke at the Zcentre, he'll tell you about it, he's a top man on the advise front. As the page says, they can fit it for you or you buy the kit, either way he'll help you out.

Any ideas on the other questions people?

Andy Z on the traders forum worth a ring on anything for a Z.

£230 for a cambelt job approx.

Are u DIY mechanic? If so you will save loads of dosh.

Arthur

Is the whirring noise definately coming from the wheels?

Read somewhere that there's a fan in the plastic housing

between the t-tops, it's something to do with the a'con system.

This can get clogged up and make a whirring noise!

It's the vented piece next to the courtesy lights.

The whirring noise is too loud to be the little fan in the roof, it sounds more like the engine fan if anything. Do these cars use a viscous coupling? At the moment its quite noisy in the cabin.

£230 isn't too bad for a cambelt change. I just have to find someone that is willing to do it in my area (west sussex)!

Does anyone have a glove box for sale? My knackered!

I like your strategy, get your money's worth.

1/ So do I, but it seems to be engine speed related, not road speed, so can't be wheel bearings. On mine the noise is more apparent on the overrun... in fact, that's just about the only

time you can hear it.

Spin the viscous fan with the engine off - if it spins easily, it's broke!

If it's road-speed related it could be prop bearings or diff whine.

2/ AndyZ in trader's section. (And see my sig!)

3/ Bad news for your wallet - 60k - so not long away. May as well get it done now.

4/ Dunno, both my imports had already been tricked.

I have a spare glovebox - will check its condition for you :)

Also got some 300km/h clocks - if you have the speed convertor fitted (still uses the kmh figures but is in mph intead) these are good up to 300mph LOL

Whirring - need to hear it really.

It seems to me that the fan type ish noise is coming from up front, not the rear, so not the diff. I'll have alook at the fan at the weekend. If you pay for a warranty, you may as well use it!! :D

The car overall drives great, pulls really well, no....... REALLY well. ;) I am assuming that these cars are supposed to be fairly quiet in the cabin? Is that correct? I'll have a gander in the engine bay, I ought to get familiar with it I guess!

Andy,

If the glove box is in decent nick, I'd like it. My one is completely shafted. I think it had a cd changer in it and some thieving twat ripped it out.

Surely when you install the speedo conversion, all you do is wire in the little box behind the instrument, and your 190 kph speedo now reads 190 mph (just put a mph sticker over the kph)

John

No the outer dial reads in MPH up to 110. Which is pants.

Is the noise coming from the very front at the bottom of the car?? There is an electrica; fan down there that is controlled by the coolant sensor(yellow electrical connection on the top ally coolant pipe behind the main fan at the top). This sensor somtimes comes loose and causes the fan to come on constant. Its very load. I discoverd it after changing my cam belt and the fan came on constant. The noise dissapeared at speed. Just a thought!!

Dave,

I think if you get the conversion kit from the zed centre, your existing 190 kph speedo is transferred into a 190 mph unit simply by adding the electronic mods.

AHA!!! Yes! At above 60mph it starts to quiet down! I'll be checking that at the weekend! Cheers!

I see, thats cool then.

Next question.

Does anyone live in West Sussex, say Crawley area? I need a decent garage that will do the cambelt?

Easy way to check - at idle, pull the yellow connector off. (There's a clip on it, so don't just yank...)

The fan should come on when the ECU loses the signal from the disconnected sensor - if you can't hear it come on and/or go off when you plug the connector back in, it's either already on, or it's broken!

ok, it seems that the noise isnt engine related? When I rev the car in neutral it doesn't make the noise, so I guess it isn't the fan?

Any other ideas?
