Ok I need some help on turbos,I was offered a pair of turbo dynamics T28 hybrids,However I have heard bad reports on failure on these turbos,do any of you guys have them fitted?

If so can you tell me anything about them, sorry about my first post sounding silly but I just bought my first Z and one of my tubs has failed.

Thanks Martin

Have you thought of JWT 500Sport?

Or you could get your turbos reconditioned.

well I have being given a price direct for £1700 all in,what I want to know srrae is are these good turbos and worth fitting.

Chris I know the Greddy ones are very good maybe its worth me spending a few hundred pounds more?

Thanks Martin.

£1700 just for the turbos?

If you have the money and are willing to spend, you cant go wrong with Greddy!

Are there any other modifications to your car? You are better off asking other people as Im not too up on turbos. You cant go wrong with Greddy though. Its whether they would be wasted on your engine.

There is no point putting on big turbos when the rest of the engine is standard.

Hi Martin,

it might have been mine that you have heard failed.

I had the TD stage II-III when i first had them fitted they seemd to go well - they are not a big turbo so the spool up was excellent and they seemed very responsive, i maxed out at 421 bhp

As we increased the spec and horsepower of the engine something went wrong - still not too sure what. In trying to determine the problem to report back to the manufacturer we managed to break a piston. So there is the story. If you would like to wait a few weeks we should be getting the report back from Turbo Dynamics as to the cause of the problem - it might just be a one off and i suppose these things do happen. The mark of a quality company is how they deal with the problems once they arise.

In all honesty i couldnt reccomend them until we find out what went wrong.

Bear in mind that every turbo replacement means a complete engine out job - hence very expensive.

What spec is your engine, and what are you looking to achieve - good responsiveness/good top end bhp ?

Regards,

alex

At that price either someones either forgot the vat and some or it's the bargain of a liftime as they retail for £2250

Got em on mine car and have been brill for over 2 years.

smithy

Thanks for that CJ I will give that one a miss until you find out,I was told it was a red Z that they failed on.At this moment in time my car is stock but I do want to start on the power climb.

Thanks, Martin.

Turbos are a long way down the list then!

You need:

Everything running right

Everything running right

Everything running right

Induction

Exhaust

Chip / mapping

Boost controller

And then depending on the car you might need fuel injectors or intercooler upgrades before the stock turbos run out of puff.

You might want to think about brakes and shocks to handle the power somewhere in that list, and almost certainly before you get to new turbo territory.

Unless you're thinking of doing the whole lot at once? I know you've got a failed turbo - I'm just highlighting that you won't see much benefit out of uprated tubs without spending a lot of money on other things!

HI Rodney,

well the update is that with the collective opinion of loads of people is that nobody can agree on what went wrong. There was obviously a problem when they were fitted to my car but the turbos when tested on a bench tested ok.

what are you wanting to achieve ? an how much are you wanting to spend?

maybe this might give you some ideas: I'm buying the pentroof's by the way

Greddy TD05-18G - macca nutter turbos

Pentroof TD05-16G + manifolds and wastegates £4,500 and the dogs danglies - should be good for 550 uk fwhp with internal engine mods

Greddy TD05-16G + manifolds and watsegates £3,500 a good kit but not quite as good as the pentroof - should be good for 550 uk fwhp with internal engine mods

Smithy stage II-III £2,000 turbos only - should be good for 450 uk fwhp - would probably benefit from the divorced wastegate downpipes.

I wouldn't really recommend spending any less than this because the advantages over stock would be minimal

other turbos to consider

JWT 500 / 530 well respected quick spooling turbos

HKS 2530 one of the quickest spooling of the big turbos

Other things to consider

getting your turbos from SE Nissan - They can supply a T28 hybrid (probably good for 400 uk fwhp) or a full T28 which would be good for over 500 uk rwhp with appropriate engine mods. the thing to bear in mind is that if SE supply and fit the turbo everything is covered under warranty if anything goes wrong.

all turbos will benefit from a decent air intake and the internal wastegated turbos will benefit from the divorced wastegate downpipes.

So in short you pays your money and takes your choice. This is nowhere near a complete list but i hope it has been some help.

also the PE 1420's are worth a mention as these can be picked up for a good price from the states

definately - the PE1420 is supposed to be a very good turbo - unfortunately i know nothing about them. The only person i know running the 1420's is andy duff.

alex

PE1420s, erm what can I say...... They are AWESOME :D Minimal lag, come in HARD at around 2500rpm, good for 550rwhp, need I go on? ;)

Andy, yer know much about the PE1820's like what power there good for and equal to what other tubs, costing about £2.5K seem pretty good for the complete kit.

smithy

Not much experience m8 but with the right supporting mods, supposed to be good for over 750-800RWHP. Looking at the flow charts for them, they aren't that much laggier than the 1420s. Once I get bored I'm gonna be having a play with a set of these ;) Don't tell the mrs tho :D One thing I do know is that you MUST have decent manifolds with these otherwise you'll have worse performance than stock = much more ££££ than it first appears :(

Greddy TD05-18G - macca nutter turbos

Too right Alex;)

Looking at this old thread, have any new turbos taken the lead, most of these seem to still be available!
