I know it helps with the air flow, making it smoother, but is it really with doing?

I have spent hours doing it and only done 1

Is it worth doing the rest?

You can see the difference. The one infront has been done and at the top one which hasn't and you can see the bumps and cast lines.

I say if youve started then you may aswell finish it. If it does make a difference then it cant do it much good having 1 cylinder being more powerful than the others.

But then im no engineer so im probably talking ass lol.

All IMHO of course. I think that TT heads flow pretty well as they are. You can probably improve them a bit but you can just as easily crank the boost up a bit more. If you are already at your boost limit because of turbo inefficiency, intercooler not big enough etc then a port job is not going to help that much.

The porting the head is one small thing I am doing to the car. better intercoolers will be going on before its finished.

Stu,don't forget to port the lower plen;)

I fecking know :S

Actually that will be easier as the casting marks are no where near as bad, and its a larger space to get my fingers into. OOooo Errrr!

In my limited exp of NA engines, this makes the engine "sweeter" and it does make a difference. Before turbos came along it was one of the basic mods you had to do if you wanted more hp.

Seeing as you have started - you might as well finish it - its bound to make at least a bit of difference even if its not noticeable when driving.

There's a difference between 'porting' and tiding up the castings, which is what you're doing. However, I think what you're doing is worth it, especially as you have it all apart anyway.

Although the stock TT heads are very good, there is still room for improvement ;) As Andy says, you are not porting them but just cleaning up the castings. For a full DIY guide to porting see here:-

;)

Yes port them it makes huge difference especially on the lower plenum and if u extrude honed more differnce as well

hi

what you are doing will actually loose you power stop now before you total f**k it up

my reasoning for this is at low valve lifts this fuel air mixture is not up to speed the fuel can drop out of the air mixture and on to the port floor

with a rough casting there is a chance of the are picking the fuel back up in to the stream,

but a polished finish will just allow the fuel droplet to make it into the cylinder not mixing with the air and cause loads of problems like detonation poor fuel consumption and poor pick up

to rectify use an 60/80 git flap wheel and rough it up a bit

yes porting heads is allways a good thing a proper ported head would take you around a week if you worked everyday(8 hours)

i used to do this on cossie heads and if done right you can get the turbo spinning up alot quicker

on one perticular car (montego 2.0 turbo  )had turbo producing 7psi @1100prm

where standard head(engine) turbo was producing 2psi@1500rpm

I always thought porting on a forced induction engine was a waste of time as it offers no benefit. Works well on N/A engines though.

Stu all I can tell you is I do know it is a specialist job,for years PeterR was the only guy who would take this on at SE.

well reading about it properly, its not really porting, just polishing the intake taking away the casting lines.

When I first looked at the head, I couldnt really see anywhere obvious it needed doing.
