Pinking is the same as detonation. Its when the fuel ignites before it should. I think the damage is caused by 2 shockwaves of the ignition of the fuel before it should happen and ignition of some fuel when it should. The 2 shock waves collied causing damage. That is what you can hear. I read it on the internet a while ago.

You can try some injector cleaner as they may be blocked. Resetting the ECU may help. The usual culprit are the O2 sensors

i was told it could be the fuel regulator or low fuel pressure

Yes, low fuel pressure causes a lean mixture and hence detonation as can the timing being too far advanced. There are many causes.

I'm probably going to get b****xed for saying this but Leicester to Fazely is not that far. Take it real easy and you should be ok. Detting usually occurs whilst boosting or at higher rpms. Alternatively, speak to Jeff (ZedWorld) and get him to arrange a flatbed to pick up your car.

ther must be someone in leicester apart from chunk who can help me out??

I'd check the obvious and do preventative stuff before you start spending money on garages - get smithy's fuel kit and replace the lines (it's quite easy, even I managed it), change the fuel filter, and make sure you have no boost / intake leaks.

Remove boost jets / bleed valves if you have them!

I did all the above and my det has gone. (Was a fairly consistent problem before, would get it at about 5k revs on three quarter throttle.)

How's the idle? That often shows up related problems...

th idle at th moment is pretty rough, especially when its really cold, stil rough when warmed up tho, bobbing up and down. i cant hear anything bad from th engine so maybe i just dnt have very good ears or dnt no wot to listen for. thanx for th info

Sounds like either the good old ECU temp sensor (yellow connector at front of engine near rad) - have a look and see if the contacts have gone furry, if the connector sits properly, etc...

...or boost leaks! Looks for split boost hoses (but there are about a million boost hoses.)
