Why do garages always quote Mr Joe Public a price for something excluding VAT??

Most of their customers are not VAT registered companies but individuals so cant claim it back - so why do they give you the net figure??? I wouldn't expect Mr Newsagent down the road to say his mars bars were 29p plus VAT...so why are garages so different??

Just a gripe ;)

There is on mars bars you whopper!! :slap:

Its a "luxury food" ;)

Its because they quote what they want to make from it.

And they are hoping people probably forget that and when they get 2 quotes, one £300 inc.VAT and the other £260+VAT, most people will go for the £260 one cos it sounds cheaper until they work out the VAT

I'm really curious what goes on inside your head Stuart - do you hear voices? :D;)

PMSL!!!

**edit** I can't remember what I was going to say now  :D

V.A.T is meant to be on "luxuries" and non V.A.T items are so called "necceseties".....

....so why is there no VAT on a newspaper, but VAT on toilet roll???

Digestive buiscuit....no VAT, but CHOCOLATE digestive....17.5% !!!

Oh, and Pete, just so you know, theres no VAT on porno mags either!!!!!

The fact is, if you are vat registered , you pay the tax man vat on all goods and services. It is easier to put vat on all your invoices than to run two seperate invoice systems one for those who use the vat system (so that they can reclaim the right amount) and one for those who dont. But the garage themselves dont have any choice as to what they do or dont charge VAT on.

Thats plums Jock :slap:

The aformentioned Mr newsagent is also Vat registered, and he does'nt list vat seperately on his marsbars, cans of stella, ciggies, etc etc

Actually, he probably does.......in a way. He would know which of his goods purchased were zero rated and would pro-rata his sales accordingly

Also, bakers often have two tills...one to ring in hot food sales (vatable) and one for cold food (no vat)

Ever noticed on your Sainsbury's bills, some items have a * next to them?

These are the vatable items so their software can calculate the vat.....

Can't tell I'm an accountant, can you ???? :slap:

Richard ;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Hi Rich - me too! :p :p

I'm not complaining about them charging it FFS...I know the rules...its the fact that Mr Mechanic quotes Joe Public the net cost then sort of whispers plus VAT under his breath...
